 @Blizblaz sorry to hear about your rooster and hens
yes they look so happy digging around...also they keep the bug population down around my house ...i have a terrible reaction to ticks and i haven't seen one near my house since i bought chickens...bonus they eat mosquitoes...

how do you make a bear proof coop? :rubbingchin: a sea-can came to mind...

Have you tried electric fence wire around your coop area I seen it used in remote hunt camp situations in the north luck

I am back, sort of, life without electricity is darn exhausting, very grateful for the generator that runs the freezer and sump pump, apparently our basic needs ;)
We got hit on Saturday afternoon, was siting in the gazebo when the first lightning struck, and since the dogs aren't fond of that went in to the house, and all hell broke loose....trees bent in a way I never thought possible and the damage is very similar to the ice storm, less branches but more mature trees down...
my usual doggy walk in the back of property,
Can't go there..
looking towards the %22dock%22.jpg
can't go there either..
Looking down the %22ski hill%22.jpg
The gazebo is still standing, and incredibly enough 3 plastic chairs and a table in the backyard never moved :idunno:

Hi all
Yeah we were hit too. It threw our pergola into the horse paddock... Thankfully only a few breaks and i think its salvageable. Had to repair and retension the electrics though and remove a busted fence post. We are used to bad weather but this rolled in so fast it was shocking. Glad i taped the beejeezus out of the greenhouse! It actually stayed up. Also glad i got the barn closed in time. 3 minutes of incredible wind and trees being trashed... And then it was over. Will never forget this one. Watching the trees by the river just being mangled... Only casualty was a clematis that tried in vain to stop the pergola from blowing away. The wind actually stripped the mulch out of my gardens!!! Insane.

Anyways we spent a day and a half hauling around the generator to the neighbours and back. Fried our 22 yo fridge... Sigh. It did not like the power coming back on via generator. Oh well. Didnt owe us anything. Did not get anything done this weekend that we wanted to haha.

Worse though... It hit here about 1130 (we measured 138mm/hr on our weather station) and at 430pm got a call from my step mom that her and my late dads cottage in the laurentians lost its roof. Quite literally. The photos are just ugly. Sigh. Trees leaning on the house and the whole bit. At least noone was there to get hurt.... And hopefully we can find someone to repair it soon before too much weather gets inside.

Bear proofing a coop-bare wire electric run a hot along the ground about 4 inches up then a ground 2 inches above that and then another hot wire 6 inches above that and another ground 2inches above that and another strand of hot 6 inches above that. Good solar or electric fencer...this does not rely on dirt for ground they just touch 2wires (a ground and hot) and zap

Still surveying the damage here, apparently we had 190km/hr wind, never thought I would see that.
all that extra work @WLLady as if there wasn't enough already,

12 trees down at last count here, but still finding ones I missed on my first round.
man was killed on a golf course here, so I guess we were lucky after all.

my "solitude" bench.....
Another look, hosta garden after the storm.jpg
BTW, turns out the washing machine that was supposed to arrive on Wednesday, next delivery day July.....
The New roof that was supposed to be done June 1st, postponed indefinitely ......
here is hoping we do not need the healthcare system soon, think that has been postponed indefinitely too..

Time to chime in...not that my opinion truly counts for much, but meh, why not.
On the topic of bear proofing, not sure that there is a 100% gauranteed method but @ross ' idea on the electric fence works...the trick is to have at least one wire at nose height and that's a guess on how big the bear is....if it get its face between the wires all bets are off, he (or she) will have their way with the coop....this method works for bee keepers....and as an aside fyi, bears don't go for honey...they want the bee larvae in the cells.
On the topic of thia crazy weather last weekend, it came on fast but the brunt of it passed us just a little to the north....I could watch it clearly move along....we got some dandy wind that blew atuff around and broke smaller weaker branches off trees and the rain was crazy wild for a quarter hour but thats about it...I had dozens and dozens of tomato seedling in trays on the lawn hardening off this past week and it musta looked silly as MJ and I scurried to get them under cover before the wind really hit....I have 4 daughters one in Kanata, one in Stittsville one in south Ottawa and one in Arnprior...the ones in Arnprior and Kanata faired well, no real issues, the one in Stittsville lost a goodly portion of her roofing shingles as did almost all of her neighbours...the roofers are gonna do quite well this summer....and the one in south Ottawa just got her power on at supper time today...a week without power...no damage just no electricity....lost a lot of food along the way...no one hurt tho, so thats good...I never lose power here...just sayin'..lol...hadta add that part...
Waiting for 24 eggs to hatch on Monday/Tuesday...all Wellies...hoping for at least 50% hatch success...wish me luck, and yes, pix are mandatory....yes yes yes...stay safe folks

And wouldn't you know it, @TomK we were in that line of wind before it hit Stittswille,
going for a walk in the neighborhood, you can see how the wind traveled, there is a large oak down next door, never saw that before..

as an aside, we have a contract for new roof, signed last fall, scheduled for June 1st, apparently that isn't happening....

Sorry about your roof not happening OC. We hired the worst roofer in the world in Kingston about 3 years ago, paid up front and - you can guess the rest. A real battle to get it done.....
