a biosecurity nightmare......one would need a strict quarantine protocol for every bird coming back. but i would go one step further and sell them "insurance" that if their bird got got by a dog or something that they wouldn't have to pay the cost of the bird....

I'm pretty sure these would be single-season birds. I suppose you'd buy chicks/hatch eggs in October and distribute the layers the next spring, then collect and sell them cheap in the fall for soup/dog food.
