thegawd wrote:QR_BBPOST some how in my sleepy state I remembered about the mop head "fake momma hen". I didnt have a clean mop head handy at 1am so I grabbed a touque and a pipe cleaner, wrapped the pipe cleaner around the top of the touque and hung it beside the heat lamp with it almost touching the ground. well lil chick climbed inside and went to sleep and so did I. man was I ever happy about that, I truly thought she was guna wake the entire house up and give me a headache.

ingenious! thank you so much to whoever posted about that mop head hen a while back... it works!

Twas the "Poultry Princess" (me - LOL ) who posted about the Fake Mama.
I also posted pics of the mop head mama I used this year.
It was an old trick my mom-in-law wanted me to try.
Her mother used the trick while raising chicks in Finland.

~~~ the story goes ~ "Iso-Aiti" was a single parent with 9 children during the depression.
She raised chicks, using the fake mama because she had no hydro.
Daily she rode her bike thru town, selling chicks from a basket.
It was the only way she was able to feed her children.
Must have worked because she brought all 9 children to Canada in the late 40's
SOOOOOOO glad the fake mama worked for your Xmas chick.
Maybe someone has a chick to give you, so it won't be lonely?
BTW, nice variation. Would never have thought of a touque.
I once used a small fuzzy duck toy. Chick luved it.
Well @PoultryPrincess , Chickadee and I thank you and your ingenious MIL SOOOOOO much! I dont know if that has ever been written in a book but I tell ya it works wonderfully! Your MIL sounds like she is a very brave, strong and extremely smart woman! :beer:
Chicky preens the touque, talks to the touque and cuddles up to it. shes one very happy chick, she gets to come out of the brooder a couple times a day for about 20 mins at a time, gets lots of attention and some treats (kernel corn or oatmeal). when shes put back in she cuddles back up to the touque and goes to sleep.
WOOHOOO :-)
Jan - just say no! I too think it's a girl based on nothing but the delicacy of HER feet and legs.
