Good Morning!
Well ya'll were a no show!!! Coffees cold. You even missed teriyaki salmon and basmati rice with a salad for dinner. Maybe next time!!
Cheeky Barons chilli would of been totally welcomed with all the company!! Yum!! Not sure what baby beef means....but whatever, it's not roadkill raccoon or possum.
WLLady, I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. Hopefully you work within your limits. (Although, I'm going to go on a limb here and say cleaning coops/pens is likely out of the limit lol)!
Strong independent get'er done woman! Nothing wrong with that.

Good Morning!
Veal is a calf that hasn't eaten grass (meat is pink)
Baby beef: just weaned or perhaps still milking, but not adult: less than a year old
Steer: castrated male and kept to 18 months , usually finished on grain
First time w dried kidney beans: put on stove an hour and let to cool; did it again and finally chewable (but not nearly as soft as canned beans); used em two days later
We got all these big ideas and buy dried beans but rarely use em.
Next time soak overnight; drain and new water then cook. Who thinks that far ahead?.

Good Morning!
the secret to good baked beans......rinse in COLD water until the water runs CLEAR. very important the CLEAR part. Then cold water soak overnight. then change the water to new COLD water in the morning for at least another 3 hours. Then run under cold water until the water runs CLEAR again. then slow cook with your favorite recipe. you will have nice tender beans and NO fart issues. LOL
and yes, i do plan meals 3 days ahead sometimes. and the worst is slow cooking beans overnight and waking up at 2am because all i can smell are wonderful baked beans!
well, i only got 5 pens of the 15 done over the two days of the weekend. i'll putter on the rest during the evenings over the week. at least the pens that really needed it are done. learning slowly how to use tools LOL. i sound like a neaderthal LOL. i put the feed from the truck onto the cart, then that gets pulled over and dragged onto a skid that gets hoisted up to the loft, dragged off and dumped into the bins that are on little movers platform trolly things. the shavings are the same, bales up like that. the drag the shavings bales to the pen, slash diagonally (make sure the knife is sharp....lol) and peel off the wrapping so i don't lift the bales at all. i use a plastic push snow shovel for the removal of litter, it just gets pushed out the door into the middle and then over to the edge of the loft floor, tractor bucket is up right under the edge of the floor so i can just push the dirty litter right into the tractor bucket. if i can avoid leaning to floor level and standing back up, it's all good. well, mostly all good. LOL. it's amazing, chickens are what, 5-6 pounds...and they still can pack down this concrete stuff around the water dishes somehow LOL. for that i have a flat edge metal shovel....scrapes it up pretty well. all in all, go slow. the worst parts are climbing the stairs (i should ride the hoist LOL) and driving the tractor over bumpy ground to the manure pile. so all in all, still doable. we also processed 14 extra cockerels....and looks like farrier will take my wheaten marans boy, glad he's going to a good home! and i decided on future breeders (males), so....was actually busy. then out for martin's birthday dinner yesterday
ah dinner at barons!
i grew some south american chilis (anjous and some others) OMG were they ever wonderful. i made hot pepper paste from them about 2 years ago, and it has kept wonderfully and is just perfect, a nice organic earthy heat. so different from cayennes. i saved some seeds so i think i'll be growing them again, they were kinda gangly plants, but produced like mad! use that in all my stews and chilis. and now you guys have done it, i want chili tonight, but need a day to soak beans. LOL i'll get on that tonight. oh, and store bought dried beans are nasty. if you have never grown and used your own, try it sometime. they're soooo much better! just my opinion.
hope everyone has a wonderful quiet day, nothing unexpected, and all good

Good Morning!
I have a couple of types to plant this year for home grown beans. They are both pole type but produce beans for drying. Good Mother Stallard and Cherokee Trail of Tears. We'll see how they like our zone!

Good Morning!
Good morning, back to deep freeze here but sun shining so everything looks nice and cheerful.
This whole thaw and freeze cycle is producing some interesting effects, DH made a path with snowblower in to the bush, which is being used by hordes of deer and turkeys, not sure that was a great idea, leads them straight to my cedar hedges.
Time to start separating the Ameraucana breeding pens, will need to sell some hatching eggs to pay for that barn fan.
Never tried to grow beens for drying, but seeing this is the year of the pulses, I guess it may just be the thing.

Good Morning!
You can cook beans without soaking...just boil for about 2-2.5 hours in water with no salt (the salt will prevent them from softening.) Then add them into the chili you have started. Always use dried bean here, canned ate waaaayyyyy too expensive. Hope this helps.
