Re: Plastic or Metal
We use the plastic water cooler bottles. Set them on the ground and use a drop hose in through the hole in the lid. Keeps out dirt and critters. I don't like using plastic, but I dislike aluminium even more than plastic.

I use mostly plastic now, a few aluminum and getting down to a handful of old tin. If I had my way, I'd go all aluminum, but because of the plastic being easy to clean and very available I have been upgrading to them. Not to mention, in the blue plastic, they are semi transparent so you can see if they had any sap run just by looking at them. Also, don't buy them from TSC... way over priced. Go to a maple supply and get them for around $4 instead of $6.99 at a big box store.

We use metal spiles and the blue plastic pails with lids. We collect in a 50 gallon barrel and when that is full we boil.

I have 2 plastic spiles, Its my first time tapping... ran great the first day. is it possible that the taps get clogged? can i just make the hole in the tap larger? Well i checked... they are not clogged.
Im in the same area as Wllady, Bakor... in between Sarnia and Chatham, close to the St. Clair River. There is absolutly zero snow on the ground n mud...
Heres my setup...
