Re: help for ID
My mailing address is Merlin Ontario. But unlike the bird, it is pronounced merLIN.
A merlin is about the size of a pigeon, more or less. So your most likely correct, Most of them I have seen are a little more rufous coloured especially the breast, but that is out west.

Re: help for ID
SO @Farrier I am confused again! Have a hawk that looks the samw but is actually bigger. 12+ inches. Don't think the same bird but will try to get better pics. Hanging out picking off sparrows. Might have to chase it away a bit. The wings are confusing me as they aren't pointy but not rounded either!

I think the bird in the picture is an immature Sharp Shinned Hawk. I get them here sometimes.

Re: help for ID
@Shnookie I think you are right! Looking at the info the flight pattern etc seems right. At one point it was waiting at the coops for the sparrows to come out of the coop (pests). Haven't seen it for a couple of days.

Re: help for ID
Surprised as heck just now. Came round the corner to see a peregrine sitting on the chicken coop fence! By the time I got the camera it had left.

Hawk central here right now. This chap has turned up, very big - 20" no white rump and rounded wings in flight.

Re: help for ID
@KimChick The young Welsummers were quite nervous. The turkeys just ignore them and the biddies don't seem to care and just go inside their coop. Quite big enough to take one so we keep an eye out. It seems to hang around after they've gone to coop and we've seen one with a rat in it's claws.
