Thanks, everyone! That's a relief. I'll get mine in this weekend.

That is a very pretty picture of a fine theory of somebody who has never built a raised bed.
ask @Killerbunny how to build a raised bed that works.

Re: What is left in your veg garden ?
@lolotsung , a few years back I actually did put some small raised bed together loosely based on the Hugelkulture model that your picture appears to be depicting. IMO it does work, but it takes a few seasons for the bottom layers to completely break down. As long as the first couple of feet down is good growing medium and allows enough depth for root development, and you don't mind topping up quite with compost etc., every season before planting, it's a good way to add bulk to the bed if you don't have a lot of compost and soil mix and quite a bit of deadfall and larger branches (and leaves to fill in the gaps). Not ideal for growing perennial plants and herbs, but for annual veggies, worth the effort if you have enough of the HugelKulture ingredients handy.
edited to add: I got our garlic planted this weekend and mulched with grass clippings, just in time for a good soaking of rain.
Next I have to get my geraniums boxed up for winter dormancy. I haven't ever done this before, but thought I'd give it a try this year because I bought some beautiful colours in baskets from a garden centre's July end-of-season sale, and I'd like to have them again next year.

Jaye, you might want to take some cuttings for insurance! I once tried that thing where you put all the dried geranium roots in brown bags in the basement for the winter, but it didn't work for me
. Instead, leaving a plant in our un-heated sunroom with no water for five months DID work for a few seasons until we had an incredibly cold winter
.
This year, I've taken some cuttings from a gorgeous one that I saw growing at a business in Brockville (with permission from the owner. KB might be able to guess where!) I also bought some littlegeraniums with beautiful foliage from a nursery. After potting them up to bring in, I learned that you're not supposed to do that, but it's just as well that I did because mine had been growing in those nasty peat pellet things with netting that really restricted their root growth. They're not all that happy, but I'm hoping that I can keep them going on the windowsill.....

Not sure your location - but I live 10min north of Belleville and plant my garlic around Oct 25th. Last year was a warm fall and I didn't plant my garlic till the 2nd week of November.Jaye wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 3:57 pmDoes anyone know if it's too late to plant garlic? Time got away from me this year (even more so than in previous years), and I just realized that I haven't even prepared the bed yet. No big deal, it won't take long, but I am more concerned that they will have enough time to establish before the hard frost ...
