Chicken Age

Post by Killerbunny » Mon Feb 15, 2016 8:12 am

Just had a thought re showing chickens/turkeys etc. Do all poultry etc have the same birthday for showing purposes (like Jan 1st for thoroughbreds) or is the hatch date used. eg the show is on July 5th and the chicken hatched July 10th. for the show is it Cock or Cockerel, hen or pullet? Odd question I know! I've started wingbanding with year of hatch to try to make it easier.

i think from spring to spring it would be considered a year old I don't think the day really matters, most people will say this bird is a 2012hatch, you seldom hear this bird was born April 5th

A cockerel is under 1 yr of age, a cock is over 1 yr of age.

Local Fairs tend to be a bit more vague and may not have age distinction, so you will do better with a more mature animal as either a pullet or cockerel will not show as well as a hen or a cock.
