I have used TED5000 successfully in monitoring power usage in the past.
If I had to purchase one now I would have a close look at bidgley.com to see what equipment works with them.
The main difference is that the ted will tell you how much you used, but the bidgley will also tell you what is on and how long (you need to train it though).

I also helped a neighbour out with their huge Feb '15 bill with a current clamp on a multimeter and just watching the current draw on the panel eliminating one thing at a time. That one was a no brainer though, they installed a hot tub end of Jan and couldn't figure out that Feb was $500 higher :cowmuh:

Lanark county is replacing the TOU meters in rural areas because they don't work well depending on the positioning. Our friend has endless problems with his meter, keeps frying itself?

Our delivery charge is always higher than what we consume. Go figure!

LOL hey maybe I could hook up a bunch of inverters and power up this old farm house. okay im totally kidding about that but if the grid ever officially goes down I can make my own electricity if I need it...

We joke but the grid going down is the biggest security threat we face. http://www.forbes.com/sites/robertlenzn ... 0897f9479f
A bunch of guys asleep at the wheel in Ohio and the power grid goes down for three days (summer 2003).
I've seen talk show interviews and this is where we're vulnerable... or solar flares (satellites fried in early 1990's only pagers affected then) and we (earth) missed a big flare two years ago that would have fried satellites, computers, power grids etc. would have put us back to the Amish age. I'm a "prepper" wannabe (gotta work on the budget). Gotta smoke some more meat.

I was sanding a ceder deck when that happened. a beautiful deck rather large deck surroundong a hot tub... not mine... and this is what happened... palm sander flickered n went out... I check cord, I check the plug, I check the breaker, then made a couple phone calls and realised the power was out all across town. I cleaned up the jobsite and went straight to the beer store and grabbed a couple cases of beer. while driving around we hear on the radio that the power is out all across ontario n whatever so what do we do? fill the cooler up beer n food on top no ice.... head straight to camp. no electricity at camp... not on the lots anyways... turn the propane fridge on, get the beer on ice from the ice machine... the park started filling up it was awesome! we were there a couple days n it wasnt until dark that we realized the power had came back on when the street light, we call it the bike light... came back on... we were drunk n had to stay another night. it was just another weekend for me hahaha. never even had a care in the world!

p.s. i have a geiger counter ;-)

I remember knowing it was going to be serious when there was an announcement on the radio (battery job) that the Beer Store in Huntsville was closed!

. When my 1st wife died in the 70's I went off the grid cause trying to pay mortgage etc one cheque . Real simple . Just went to main breaker & pulled it to off . Gravity oil furnace , hunt camp woodstove , oil lamps , underground fruit cellar . Livestock in barn / freerange to butcher as needed & wild rabbits , squirrels , racoon , ducks etc . Just me but no problems . Hand pump on shallow well . Can be done real easy just have to want to . Luck
PS had it disconected for 1.5 yrs till i sold .
