So...the only things laying with any consistency here are the ducks and they NEED TO STOP LAYING! LOL. seriously worse than rabbits. Very soon (like maybe this weekend) I am going to divvy up all my chicken girls into their breeding pens for going forward and select my cockerels to grow out. the others NEED to be freezer camped. so much sparring and chasing and not to mention the noise in the morning! my neighbours all swear they don't mind, and they find the wild turkeys in the spring gobbling worse, but....still. I love it, but....it's a little much. Hazmat disposal day in dutton, so DH is off with the truck to get rid of the oil and paint and batteries and stuff. Then there's just a monster tractor battery core to take somewhere (somewhere with a forklift...lol). It's good to get all that stuff gone. Barn cleaning needed this weekend. the horses are spending more time in than out because of these monstrous giant black horseflies. My goodness these things are like flying demons and horrible when they bite! i don't blame the horses in the slightest. And the stall is a wonderfully stinky mess of manure which is perfect for building my next garden plot. LOL. However, i need the horses OUT in order to do it, and they refuse. so.....not sure, but i might be cleaning a stall at 10pm tonight....once the bugs can't see anymore to find the horses. These bugs can chew right through fly blankets, and things like bronco and wipe are invisible to them. Ted and Molly will come running to us if we are near/in the paddock and stop so all we have to do is hit as hard as we can to kill them. it's a little intimidating to have a 2000 pound horse galloping right at you, stop on a dime and swivel on the spot to present hip that is being bitten seriously 1 foot away from you. We've learned if we don't move, it's all good. LOL. DH killed at least 10 yesterday in a span of 15 minutes. no wonder the horses don't want to be out during the day. And we have these little beetle type things that fit through our window screens. if we have ANY lights on in the house at night and the windows open we end up with the ceiling around the light just crawling with these things. never seen them this bad before! guess it's a good year for bugs. argh!

They've cancelled our Hazmat day because of COVID! I mean really, these folks are suited up anyway aan you remain in your vehicle. What's with that.

Wow. on one hand i can understand limiting contact with other people. But on the other hand it's a virus. Not some magical force field that magically gives you a disease if you see someone at a distance! If handling the containers is a problem there's hand sanitizer and gloves (and they should be wearing gloves anyways, handling the containers!)...just don't lick the gloves or stick them in your eyes and you should be good to go...?
it's not a zombie thing where if they see you they chase you and bite you and kill you or turn you into a zombie! LOL although i'm starting to think that some people are losing their brains - and they aren't even infected with the virus, just the thought of the virus! lol. every time the restrictions ease a little further its so painfully obvious who has just emerged from home for the first time.....especially on the roads.

I guess this year they had people there, but DH had to unload his own stuff and put it where he was told....

Hmm, our hazardous waste drop off was a straight forward affair, they wore gloves and masks and so did I sitting in the car, they opened the hatch, unloaded and sorted, quick and easy! If you do your homework and only bring what they’ll take and have it organized it’s fine...

My hens are still going well through this heat, a couple of the Hamburgs and the elderly Wyandotte tried going broody in the spring but haven’t had the urge since! A few feathers here and there but expect they’ll start moulting soon and hope they stagger it. I’ve been surprised they’ve been fairly good through this hot summer without much fuss.

Its been a productive day!! Sweet corn done for the freezer.... and all I did was help husk, and made a couple salads... dug fresh potatoes... 2 rows are almost died right down, the Norlands, and the Russets. I used the Russets for the salad. Used my own veggies and dill and pickles from the garden too. Only thing I had to use from the store was celery. Made a tuna macaroni salad too.

Had to share that filthy picture, LOL.

Jess just came up with 13 bags with a good heaping cupful in each!. Like that, lol.

I took some pictures of some of my chickens. The black hens are from EE's covered with a BCM. Those girls were crossed with my EO... and got lots of these barred pullets.

Heres the whole group of mixed up pullets. Some are EE's... and there are 3 BCM in there, but I have NO idea whether they are cockerels or pullets. They all look the same to me. The one is on the cement block on the right. They are all in the picture tho....

I have 7 bird baths around and ALL the birds like to use it, LOL.

My garden is doing so well, and I'm glad we got just over 2 inches 2 weeks ago, but so dry again. And looks like today's rain is missing us. But that is par for the course. I do however spot water stuff.... I watered my squash once before the rain.... and probably good thing I did.
20200813_173115.jpg
TONS of butternut. Both in this patch, and in the garden on the south side. I have NO idea how I will process this stuff... I DO have a pressure canner someone bought for me about 10 years ago.. she used it to do jars of cubed butternut, but I haven't used it since. Scared and can't remember how to lol.
20200812_155631.jpg
ALL my cucumbers, english and pickling all have the blight. I did pull the pickling cuc's up two days ago.... should get some beets in there, maybe more lettuce. I did do 12 jars of dills, but have close to 40 from last year. I made some relish using Melissa's english, and a pickling cuke seeded itself from last year, outside the chicken house door... so scobbed pics off that.
20200813_170916.jpg
Some Jack B Littles for the kids. I also have acorns.... different kinds.... and spaghetti... and white pumpkins/pie pumpkins, and kept some butternut seed from a real FAT not too long squatty plant that grew a long way from my garden in the barnyard manure, and they look almost the same, which I was hoping they would!! And I kept lots of seed, and have them in a plastic bag in the fridge. Hope they last a few more years....
IMG_0753.JPG
All my onions did amazing, but had to water them to DEATH. The sweet spanish are almost gone from the garden, been using them for eating/relish/giving a few away. These red ones are SO nice.
IMG_0793.JPG
A couple of other a-holes. Seriously, they are eating the broccoli leaves, and I found them in my NEW patch of broccoli/cauliflower/cabbage, surrounded by bales one day, just going to town. I've BTK'd them, so I KNOW there were no worms on the leaves.
IMG_0776.JPG
I can never remember what this chicken is called... someone gave her to me with the black copper marans.... ha ha ha.

Fresh crop of flying squirrels at the cabin. This one you could reach out and grab. completely unfazed by the fact I was sitting right next to it.... and I had my drink on the railing also.
IMG_0751.JPG
All my lettuce that reseeded itself last year, is doing it again. I am doomed.

Well, I guess I will go do something, I've sat inside long enough!!

Have a great weekend!!!

Oh... here are some sweet keets... need to place an ad... but also shying from Kijiji... ha ha.

I think the first breed. Glad you said she. I really wasn't sure, thinking she was, but NOT familiar with the breed at all. I think she was hatched end of May.
