Hope you can figure it out.
We have a 4 bedroom old farmhouse with a barn. Our bill for Jan (Dec 22-Jan 23) was $281 (actual meter readings). We have the usual appliances and a water and sump pump and electric hot water heater. Try and use the dryer off peak, but have low watt lights in the barn and shed for the birds and 2-3 heated waterers as well. That was about $70 over the month before. Most lights are low wattage. There are 3 of us and we do all our cooking here-no meals out for us these days!

Yeah something ain't right... Could be the meter: those meters read by remote are not always reliable. Someone stealing your power: reading tool not right...
I am sure we use more than you and our bill is $250 per month.
There's a multitude or problems with new meters: google it . The ombudsman flooded with complaints.
Get a infra red pic of your wiring could show your wiring or electrical box running hot and consuming power.

thegawd wrote:QR_BBPOST well Lizzie got off the phone and nothing has changed... our first bill was an estimate.... and this one was measured.... I sure as hell dont understand how thats possible. im very upset to say the least.

so does everyone else pay $500+/month on hydro?

Al, I live in the "rhubarb" so to speak and I am p----- off with my bill for the last month which is $263.92, (usually around $220). I run all my barn lights on timers in both of my barns, several stay on 24/7, the sump pump runs roughly every 35 minutes at this time of year, I am on a well so my jet pump kicks in whenever water is needed, etc. You are totally being gouged!! This can not be right unless someone is stealing your hydro, or you are running your washer, dryer and welder all day long? Good luck with getting this straightened out bud. Pete.

Yep: we are 4 people in an old farmhouse split in two: one electric water pump and hot water tank; two fridges &stoves, 3 deep freezers, two tv's, lots of lights but we switch em on and off all the time, pellet stove runs 24/7, electric washer dryer used off peak, never over $250 per month

I can see how consumption could be high with small children.
2 adults here, I use high consumption appliances in the "off peak only" and all oven cooking washing and drying on wknd only.
Hot water heater & dryer and any other "heat producing" appliance are the worst for hydro consumption.
$ 185 if I am supper careful, the moment I think, just this one dryer load and stop paying attention, we are up to $ 225

thanks guys and thanks for the infrared tip Baron! my sister has a video camera with infrared on it... ill see if she still has it.

well we are a family of 8 so we do do alot more landry than the average household and it gets done whenever. our dryer is kinda older but we just got a new energy efficient one it just needs a part fixed... better do that right away. no chance anyone is stealing electricity.

man I wish Nicola Teslas idea that electricity should be available to everone for free came to fruition but that was a partof his down fall. man he had so many ways of harvesting truly free energy... but nope greed won that battle and he died a poor man. RIP my friend... way ahead of his time. you know the old meters is one of his inventions... except it was an electrical generator first. it doubles the electrical output. he would be furious to know that the electric companies are charging the consumer for the energy it creates as consumed energy! that is 100% true. you could take one of those meters and reverse the polarity attach it after the real meter and use all the energy you wanted for FREE. I highly suspect this had something to do with the smart meters... cuz people were doing it.

I am going to say it's the washing that's killing you, specifically the hot water.
I am not a great believer in Cold water wash, especially with small children ;) but
if you can do your laundry after 7 PM, it would probably make a difference.
