Good Morning!

Post by WLLady » Thu Feb 11, 2016 9:25 am

good morning everyone! well, if you are thinking of driving into london today, just don't. LOL. snowing like mad here! (honestly it's beautiful, but man the drivers are crazy in town! 1 person just spun out in front of me, for absolutely no apparent reason! probably has summers on the car.....because it wasn't THAT bad!).

put 2 little fuzzybutts to the brooder downstairs, along with 3 older chicks. the one cornish is about 7 weeks old, and mothering the 2 chicks like mad, showing them how to scratch and eat, and even letting them sleep under her wing! at 7 weeks! i think she may be a good candidate for brooding in the future!

set a pile of turkeys to the incubator last night. BVF and I have discovered if we set on the same day then one of us will keep the other on track hopefully for lockdown when we both forget to write things down LOL. i can be a total ijit sometimes. i must have set 22 or 23...all mixes....found one egg in a pen this morning. Frozen solid. that one will go into some baking sometime. hadn't split all the way-YET.

got on the cancellation list for the surgeons appointment....fingers crossed. it's only 22 days now to the appointment as scheduled. had to see my GP again on monday, for better pain control. just have to make it through a few more days. will be putting in my application for a disabled permit probably today if i get there before they close. and a friend of mine made me a cane a little while back, so it's now getting use as needed. i feel so old some days. but it will all get better after they take out the piece(s) that hurt i'm sure! looks like i might have found a home for my wheaten ameraucana line, just waiting on confirmation for that. and BVF will be getting the EOs hopefully soon-i need to take them up. looks like i might be headed up to waterloo sometime anyways....

decided we are redecorating the living room and the front unfinished room in the house. slowly but surely. :-) monday is a holiday, so i'll get out the tape measure and start making plans! yay! after i plant the sweet potato shoots.....LOL
alright. since i managed to make it to work today, i should probably DO some work while i'm here....will probably head out a bit early with all this snow coming down! hope everyone has a great day!

Morning

I survived year end. Now to get through T4/T5 season and do it on time. Ugh. Wish I could quit my job (self employed) from December 31st till March 1st then say oh just kidding, I'm back.

Collected 3 of the 4 Silkie eggs yesterday. I'm not even sure Romeo is doing his rounds on all 4, but 3 I know yes. Yesterday was the first day I got 4 eggs. Must have a new layer. So 3 eggs are in a carton, 45 degree angle and being flipped and turned.

Why am I turning and flipping? How many Silkie eggs can I get under a Silkie? A few dozen? Haha!

Auto show is on. Next week I will be there with Josh. We've been going since he was in single digits. I just write an entire day off and we do the show walk through at least 3 times. He will bust my kahonas to get up early and be on the go train by 9am. I'll be lucky to get home 12 hours later.

It's cold but it's sunny and beautiful out. So far my chickenettes have been out every day, including today. Rooster is the one who sometimes loiters in the coop.

Hunters Ed and Turkey exam March 13th. Then I dunno what comes next. I will need gun storage. Suggestions? A gun shop? I prefer the pump. Or the bolt style. I feel like they are safer. My personal preference ... I think. I have to call the gun club and get some lessons for left eye dominant but a right shooter. Going to be a bit of a pickle. Skeet shooting should help that. I hope.

Looking forward to my mini vacation to Clinton for their spring show. I got a little cabin type place to hang for the weekend.

Booked a trip to Nova Scotia in August. Will bunker down in the Bay of Fundy and watch the whales get ready to leave for their migration. Kayaking is on the list, snorkelling and yummy seafood!!!

Our accommodation for Nova Scotia. Dreamy right? Nova Scotia. Whales. ocean. Bucket List. Check!

Stay warm and have a great day.

SandyM....if you shoot right handed and are left eye dominant, just make sure to close your left eye to shoot a rifle. you will compensate and learn quickly with a rifle. with a shotgun, keep both eyes open and shoot like you would point your finger. trust me. (i'm the same way, shoot right, left eye dominant). with a little training you'll get it and once it clicks there's no going back :-)
pump is a definite learned behaviour....lol. i just cannot get it without lowering the firearm. i love the bolt action. and semis are nice too!

Get a gun safe from somewhere other than a gun store-canadian tire, costco....put it in a closet somewhere (get 9 strong guys to move it for you!). bolt it to the floor. get one with a lockable portion in the top. then you can keep the guns and the ammo legally-they are separated and the ammo is locked separately from the guns, but it's all in one cabinet. then keep the combo in your head, and the back up key somewhere else. you can get a good gun safe for relatively cheap. and don't fall into the trap that you have to spend a lot of money on a firearm. you can get a perfectly respectable shotgun for 300$. you can get a really nice one for 600$. you can get an expensive brand name that still won't hit anything if you don't practice for 5000$ LOL.

you'll do just fine in the hunter portion-it's common sense. id the animal. don't point the gun at it unless you are sure what it is. id the target. make sure to id the target. make sure you KNOW what you are seeing. (did i say id the target?). LOL. the hardest thing is learning how to read and understand the regs.

your birds are amazing. mine were all on the roosts still sleeping. i swear they were telling me to close the door and go away and wake them in spring. LOL

Thanks Kathy. I love advice from the experienced. I don't like automatic. Have to get my head around that term ... I'll get there but for a cautious beginner the slower I have to move the better. lol

Apparently to store guns for livestock protection there are different regulations. I'm wondering if I can put the whole slew, safe and all in the garage. I have to read up on ammo storage again - can't be hot? Will go off? So no storage in garage? Gets damn hot and humid in Ontario in July & August. Wait. Humidity. Guns. Umm no garage. poop. Ok. Gotta rethink lol.
I think I want a rifle not a shotgun.

For someone who knows what she wants, when she wants and how she wants it, I apparently know poop about this!

Good morning,
Sunny, windy and cold this morning, -18 outside, -8 in the barn before the sun hit the windows, will warm up fast after that.
Checked around the barn as I do every morning after fresh snow fall to see if anybody has been shopping for my chickens and there is a fresh track unfortunately blown over too much to tell what, single file prints, about a size of small dog, around the door in to the barn, then gate in to the run, over the gate and in to the run and about 10 feet inside the fence and out again.
Followed it all around the fence and off in to the bush, dog was only marginally interested, so not a cat. ;)
****
Kathy, keeping fingers crossed on everything coming up for you.

Sandy , 1st thing as far as a firearm you have to decide what your going to do with it unless u can afford one of each . As with all tools some are better than others for certain usages . I hunted, fed myself , & trap shot plus predator control with a single shot 12 ga shotgun full choke & a bolt action .22 with 10 shot clip still do . If hunting migratory birds you must have a shotgun that has a 2-3 shot magazine to be legal . Different areas & types of critters reguire different guages as well . All is in the hunting regs & storage as you know in your safety course book . The best all round is a shotgun which can be used for many . MAKE yourself really familiar with all the rules & regs in print cause many folks different interpretation is not always right . Also MNR has a 800 hotline phone # listed in hunting regs & are very helpfull . Luck
PS less moving parts in your firearm of choice less to foul up when needed also rifle shoots farther than a shotgun & can richochet dangerously . Luck
