Re: First 2020 set broody
So she is in confinement, quite happily. I let her out for a run every day, eat, drink, stretch, then because the bpoody box is up high, I have to put her back on. did it this morning. Let her out while I did chores. Came back and she was skulking under a ledge, so I grabbed her and put her back on, went and did some stuff.
Two hours later< was in the chicken house and I looked in the maternity, and she was not on the eggs, standing up. So I opened the door to see what was going on, she flew out squawking. I hadnt looked close enough, and I hadnt put Peachy on, but one of her cousins. Peachy was under the ledge brooding a golf ball. The eggs were quite cool, not stone cold. I put her back on. Will see if we lose this hatch too.
And of course, I went and got some Marans eggs from 40 km away, and paid money for them. You never seem to lose a clutch of the so what barnyard mutts. Will see how it works out.
Pic is af a couple of the eggs I set. Not the absolute darkest, but pretty good coloured Marans eggs. And the same hen can lighten or darken seasonally.

Re: First 2020 set broody
Hopefully you'll still get some chicks. I had a hen sneak a clutch in December, and she wasn't the most dedicated. Still hatched 5/8.

@Farrier1987 I think they will be fine, if you had put a mask on her this wouldn't have happened, with those colourful masks you could easily tell them apart.

Oh man, reading this gives me serious envy.
I think having a setting broody would be just the distraction I need from life right now.
I feel like I am forever trying to break my silkies from going broody, but when I'm in the mood none of them are.
Murphy's law.

Re: First 2020 set broody
All my showgirls are broody along with one of my black pullets. I've been hatching since Jan and haven't had to turn on a heat lamp yet :) love/hate broody silkies...but mostly love them

Re: First 2020 set broody
Day 22 of the second set and nothing. Thats after losing the first set ten days in. This is not how it usually works. Now looking for a couple day old chicks to give her maybe. I dont want to set her again, two months straight of setting, I dont like, thought she would probably be ok. Darn darn darn.
