I will second Jaye's opinion!! Euskal Oiloa AKA Basque Hens from Spain. LOVE mine friendliest, curious, comical and most adaptable breed I have ever had.

The other point is that you really can't just go by the breed. Some lines have radically different temperaments to others.

Jersey Giants! I can't speak for other's experience, but I've never had a mean bird, male or female. They're not cuddly lap-chickens, as a matter of fact, if not well handled, they will often scream bloody murder when you pick them up, and a frightened male WILL bite. They do the normal pecking order stuff, but never to the point that a lower bird gets damaged or doesn't get enough to eat. Rooster fights are over with quickly and without bloodshed, almost amicably. Almost zero aggression. I often put fledged chicks and grow-outs in with them, because I know they won't get hurt. As a contrast, my layer pen which has various breeds and mixes, would immediately harrass and kill any chick unfortunate enough to wander in there without parental supervision lol, with only rare exceptions.

All my chickens are quite tame and docile. Once pecking order is established
I got 2 Euskal Oiloa pullets from Flat Rock Farm and I must say have never had chickens that have adapted to their new surroundings and fit in so quickly. They are actually a bit nosy. Lol
