Bought some Purina Gold'n Layena on Wednesday. I noticed the chickens were all scratching and taking sand baths yesterday, and when I filled up a small tub from the bag (which is in the basement), my arms itched like crazy. Took out the magnifying glass and saw white mites! I've managed to get everything into the freezer and hope that will take care of them. Researching last night, says that grain mites shouldn't make the chickens itch……..

Nice theory, I would be taking it right back to the feed store, one can assume it wasn't just one bag that was contaminated, one adventure after another. ;)

Good morning, humid and hot here again, supposed to rain all day, so far just some drizzle doesn't seem to bother the juniors.
Harvested a hill of the "chieftain" I think, red about double the size of the Yukon whatever.
Have a good one. :-)

It's Salsa day! In about 3 hours my back will be hurting and I will wonder why I do this to myself every year and why hubby gets the easy job of chopping peppers and garlic while SITTING in the living room watching sports while I'm doing the messy job of peeling and de-seeding tomatoes and chopping onions while standing at the counter. And in about 3 weeks (and Everytime I crack a jar through the year) I will be so thankful for one day of pain and bickering lol. Actually I can't complain because at least he helps and this year his son and daughter-in-law are coming to make a couple batches of their own. Many hands make light work. Happy Sunday!

oh i am so glad to hear someone else say that their back gets sore canning!!!! i am lying on the floor right now just flaking out letting bars and screws shut up after 8 jars of cowboy candy, 15 jars of ketchupand 18 jars of relish....or maybe 18 of ketchup and 15 of relish...i dont know....but yes so much appreciation in dead of winter.

grapes are next. but that means picking and its 100F outside!!! but will go and do when hubby is back from picking up tractor parts...because the tractor pooched out yesterday of course ALL THE WAY DOWN THERE AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE!!!! Argh. its back in the barn...for diagnostics....and hopefully successful fixing.

mites in the feed!!! yikes!!!! i got horse hay a few years back with fodder mites...first frost killed em but man the horses were not impressed....and the guy wouldnt take the hay back....so not getting hay there again...
ended up ivomecing hay before giving it to the horses on advice of the vet....sigh.

okay off to clean up canning wreckage lol. time to get grape juice everywhere. and NO we do not stomp them lol-would likely be fun...but i know what my feet walk thru daily and i dont need that in my wine ha ha...possibly sell as chicken @&$% pinot noir? after all-wasnt there something about cat digested cofee beans??! ha ha

argh! my first ever case of fly strike.....in my 6 year old boy. YUCK YUCK YUCK. hopefully he's all fixed up....but OMG SO GROSS!
the flies are crazy with this heat. I've resorted to spraying all the coops and the barn to get rid of the flies-at least to knock them down for a little bit. even with all the fly traps and tapes and bait! i cannot wait for some cooler weather, this 100F is ridiculous. but old boy was good while DH held him and i washed him up and hosed out and picked out the yuckies and then doused him in insect repellent and made sure i had gotten everything. i'll have to check him off and on the next few days to be sure. YUCK YUCK YUCK.
and he was just fine 2 days ago. it can happen that fast....come on fall and cooler temps to knock these stupid bugs back!!!!!

OMG, WLLady, that's awful! I hope he's all fixed up too. No fun for him or you and DH.
I agree with you, re: "come on fall!". This heat and humidity is doing me in, and I think that the birds are pretty tired of it too. Not that they don't appreciate the watermelons and cold packs they've been getting, but I can tell that they are ready for some cooler weather.

I had flystrike happen once. SO disgusting, looking at maggots packed tight into a LIVE rooster. Bleeeeeccchhhh. Same thing, he was fine two days before, and then suddenly just kind of sitting there. There was just suddenly a stinking tunnel packed full of maggots, three inches deep under his skin. :barf:
I hope your boy is rid of them and survives!

Is this something that afflicts roosters more than hens? Sorry for the newbie question. I have no experience with this, but I have seen pictures, and it looks just horrific.

Oh my; I was not aware of fly strike. I'll Google it later.
Never did get started with the beets today; tomorrow is another day. I did, however, get my hair cut, then went off to the feed store for more hen scratch and black oil seeds for the Jays and Chickadees. The Jays were telling me that it's time to get the Fall/Winter feeder out.
When I got home, the missing hen (that was nowhere to be found when I left) ran up to greet me with her little hen "voice", and in the enclosure she went.
