I dont know why Iv never thought of doing that until this thread here... Yeah thats a great idea! Iv had this old beaver lathe for 2 years or so... its 50+ years old and works perfectly. Found it at a yard sale :-) I want to make duck/goose and other game calls.

Thanks Man!
TomK wrote:Al....just a note...regarding the turning tools....you can grind your own from old files..the grade of steel isn't quite as hard as that used in the bought gouges etc so the tool rest on the lathe should be closer to the turning wood and keep a whet stone handy to keep the edge but man oh man does it save money...

Yup... the boys here do that too with the burls. I will get a picture of the little thing Dave made.... when I think of it. Hes got a real knack for wood/turning.... and hes happy doing stuff like that. He also made something else... another container, with a neat design on it. I'll picture it was well sometime.

We have a large summer market up here near the Pinery Provincial Park which has a lot of artisans that make this kinda stuff . Also small town called Sparta south of Aylmer Ont just full of this kind of businesses . Just have to ask/ Google & get out in your area & search um out . Just be prepared to pay more then big box store stuff tho . Luck
