Good morning!
My mother in law, when she saw our house for the first time and the plans for the barn the garden and the garden shed and the tool shead, said... " plant some grass and lie down on it"
35 years later I am starting to think she was a wise woman ;)
The house is a happier place with chicks in it, no doubt about it :)
I am not sure when these chicks hatched, but thanks to Jims great delivery they were home about 2 hours earlier then last year, and they were STARVING, I have never seen anything like it ever. The little barracudas went for a drink then food then drink then food, checked out the possible lodging and back to drink and food, had to add another feeder, because they were all eating at the same time.
By 11pm, they were still at it, with no more then couple of minutes of rest.
Finally this morning they were all asleep.
Off to watch the chicks, just as exciting this time as the last time and the many times before :)

Here are the chicks napping on "my" roost in the apricot tree. Hard to see there are five of them, since the middle three are all black. Also Miranda and Mercedes and the ducklings. Hard to call them ducklings now. I cant imagine them getting bigger.

BTW OC, Susan must have some kind of magic touch with the Wyandottes because she has managed to persuade them to lay IN NEST BOXES! We need to hire her as a trainer.

So Carla’s dad died this week, so Carla has been off, and my mother is hard of hearing. The birds were all loose, started with 4 standard buckeyes, 8 bantam rir’s, and 45 growout standard birds. A fox learned I was gone to work and the dog was in the house (keeping Carla company). 20 birds missing, feathers everywhere before somone let the dog out. of course the grass around the place is long as the cows aren’t here yet.

at least my 14 cream legbars were locked up. I was starting to grumble about my feed bill (no need to grumble now)

set up a live trap last night, got a raccoon. sheesh

All I did was take the eggs they laid on the floor and put them into a nest box. They have laid in the nest boxes both days since. They made deep bowls of the shavings and straw, all the way down to the vinyl floor. Those are pretty eggs! Mostly yolk. My reds laid much bigger eggs, but the yolks were the same size with a lot more white. Interesting, the differences.

SO sorry Bert.
They lay a medium egg which is called "tint" for colour. My other wyandottes managed to teach an experienced hen to lay outside of the box when I put her in to show the youngsters LOL! The reds likely laid an extra large egg.
