Good Morning! in 2018
Re: Good Morning!
Heard there were shingles flying in Newboro with last night's wind, and some tree(s) or branches down in Westport.

Re: Good Morning!
Yes. Going to try and get there as early as I can, but can't set a time in stone at this point. I'm looking for a Giant rooster or maybe Giant hatching eggs. I know it's a huge long shot to find anything good, but I'm hopeful...the nearest good stock to me that I've found is Peterborough, otherwise, and he's not selling this time of year! The lady I got last year's rooster from, has had a weasel attack and has nothing to spare.

Re: Good Morning!
Good morning!
Today, I had to get up REALLY early for me (I usually work nights), 7:30 am, to prepare for a potluck this afternoon, so I decided to do a morning egg check. Usually, Richard lets Pennydog out, has breakfast, and then does morning food and water for the critters...and I do evening chores and egg collection. Yesterday evening I got 13 eggs and 10 the evening before, but this morning I learned some important things. One is that Penny the dog has been eating WAY more eggs than I thought she was. This morning I got over 30 eggs. I also discovered that I have more than one female Embden (I was sure I had three ganders and one goose) and that my brown China goose and one Magpie duck are also laying, as well as a dozen hens I was cursing as freeloaders.
Penny has been begging all day, and no wonder, I denied her 20 fat eggs, the bugger!
I am second-guessing my decision to raise "a few" Embden geese for meat. I absolutely cannot tell them apart male from female, unless I catch one on a nest. You'd think the males would be noticeably bigger, and/or sound different (like the Chinas--they're pretty easy) but NOPE! And, trying to catch one on a nest to band her is usually an exercise in futility. They're sneakier than turkeys, both genders protect nests, PLUS, they often lay eggs in the middle of the night when I'm not at home.
So, I can do one of two things. One is, I can take many valuable hours to stalk geese and band them, to make sure I don't kill off any I want to keep come processing day, OR, I can do my darndest to hatch a million geese, so I don't accidentally kill off ALL the females when I'm downsizing. I wish I had the cojones to attempt vent sexing, but I'm afraid I'll hurt them
So guess which option I'm going to pick
Another busy day tomorrow, Lombardy sale hunting for a rooster or two, or maybe some hatching eggs, and maybe some Rouen ducks for someone I know, then I have to drop off some Sebastopols I hatched for a friend, then off to pick up a free hot tub that's going to be converted into a raised garden bed
, then feed the new calves. Oh yeah, I thought we were done raising beef for a little while, but got a deal we couldn't refuse...young Jerseys for $20. Expensive to raise, but the taste is SOOOO worth it. This time, they will be banded, so they're not running through the fences trying to get at the Holsteins next door. That's Monday's task, along with a hundred other things. Plenty of time to sleep when I'm dead, I guess!

Re: Good Morning!
Several people I know raise Jersey beef for themselves or small markets because they swear it's the best ever. Which it IS, I've got some of Jans Jersey beef. It's almost like a secret.

Re: Good Morning!
Good morning, sort of,
Have been without power since Friday night, after a vicked wind storm.
Have a group op five very tall spruce about 30' from the house, it looked like the were going to end up on the house several times, first time I was truly afraid , heard a large crack, but not the actual sound of a tree falling.
Woke up to a very confusing sight, it looked like less, and yet more trees simultaneously.
Turns out one spruce in the middle of the group sheered off about 12 feet from the ground and the remaining 30' got neatly deposited right beside it.
Some kind of magic at work right there, because any other one of those trees breaking and it would have been on the house.
Hydro emerdency line recording " expected power back Monday at 4pm" .?????
I can only assume they don't want to pay overtime?
Have a good one! A

Re: Good Morning!
It's not that...they have crews out everywhere from Napanee thru to Ottawa and beyond...but expect more of this in the future..teetery poles, weakened wires, how can it not happen again? ...it boggles my mind on why there is such a resistance to go off the grid electrically, especially in the countryside...never could figure out why hydro doesnt promote this, as the infrastructure to serve the rural customer is huge and onerous to maintain for very little return...oh well, I keep spreading the word...in the meantime, I have a couple of trees to turn into firewood...Ontario Chick wrote: ↑Sun May 06, 2018 10:11 amHydro emerdency line recording " expected power back Monday at 4pm" .?????
