HELPS prevent frostbite Robbie . Poor Ventalation also causes bronchial problems . Nothing other than added heat /heater prevents frostbite just like your self in house but even there u still need proper Ventalation as well . . Have sold all my heater/Ventalation books Robbie so have no way of figuring out . As per pic this is one I used 12" think 800 cfms in my loft 24/32' worked well plus 12/16 louvered vent in opposite end peak . Also other RV roof vents above all pens adjustable . There is no "Magic " fix just gets it better . You say door open during day but closed at night that's part of problem , less air movement . In barn main floor on dirt ,tin walls I have the top of south Dutch door open , covered in wire , 3/4' 24/7 no matter weather , no fan just passive air movement . Luck
PS also included pic of fan installed in peak east end of my barn . Bottom of top door is loft floor .

I understand, Robbie. I personally don't use Vaseline either, for the same reason you don't want to - messy - and also because I think it's better to use as a preventative rather than after the damage is already done.Robbie wrote: Jaye I don't want to put vaseline on the combs, the hens take their daily dust bath and that would make a real mess- but I will put oregano oil on if it looks like there's infection.
I do have a crazy idea I want to try, I will explain once I try it and if it works.
Will be interested to hear about your crazy idea - hope it works.

Think you'll be happy with those eggs from TruNorth. EMily takes it very seriously!

Are you sure it's frostbite? I've noticed black spots come and go from time to time, and I'm 95% sure it's just bruising/damage they are doing to themselves via pecking or mating.Robbie wrote: Gawd not even small black spots of frostbite? That's what mine have.

I agree with cuttlefish, never seen frostbite on hen's they will tuck their heads under a wing whereas the roosters don't. The black spots are more likely damage from another bird, frostbite looks white.

I'm leaning towards thinking it's frostbite- the combs showed no evidence of those black spots before, and the combs had white blotches on them that went black later. It all showed up at the same time. Even the pea combed rooster has one spot that's black so I'm pretty sure I have a problem.
I had no problems like that when I had single combed chickens many years ago but I always had a heat lamp on them at night.

You know it could just be a touch of , now don't freak out, dry pox. It may just clear up on it's own. a lo of birds get a very mild case of the dry form of fowl pox and it clears on it's own.

I still think it's frostbite KB, none of the cornish or buckeye hens have any spots at all. I'll try to get photos today.
