Peachy went broody a couple days ago, set her on 8 blue eggs. I only have one rooster now, and he is Ameraucana. Was hoeing in the garden, dandelions and grass, get a start on keeping the weeds down, chickens over the fence clucking at me to throw them worms. No onion or radish shoots yet. We need some warmth. Will have some more baby goats in a couple weeks. Weather looks like rain for us this wkend. Can't complain, you further north are to get freezing rain. Forked a bunch of the bedding pack out of the runin stall, hoping to get a bit out before it gets soaked again.

Had a rooster visit for a few days, but he fought with the one I have, so I took him home. He got a very warm welcome. I turned him out of his cage, and one hen came running over and squatted in fromt of him. He had jumped three by the time I got 50 ft back to the car.

Good evening again!

Today was long. I usually drive 120 km a day with the bus.... and inbetween Colleen and I went to a farm to pick up two cats to turn them into liking her place. The farm is a mess.... the guy died... and the cats are living in the dumpy sheds/junk. They have been vetted and set up at her place. I got feed before I got to her place, and came home and washed my clothes and bathed so as not to give my cat the snots/sneezes going on. Then I had a bath, and went to the barn to unload my feed. Got in just in time to hop on the bus. Got home, had supper (leftovers) and went out and cut down every raspberry cane I could find to get ready for spring growth. They sure spread from year to year.

Then I pulled up the plastic I lay down two years ago, with all the strawberries that ran all over, and of course died because they were ON plastic and not ground. That was a job. I had a soaker hose under all that, and rocks holding the plastic. I will let the few that did implant themselves in the ground beside the plastic run back into the nice soft beauty dirt uncovered there. They are the ever bearing ones. I also trimmed a few plant items up around the brick house. Mother in law while she was there planted 5 Japanese tree peony's, BIG beautiful flowers, healthy plants. Her stupid gardener cut them right back two years ago, and at least 3 of them are nearly dead. He butchered them so badly, they all suffered. I have told her for years to get rid of that guy, but I guess someone had to try and keep the beds. I am stretched so thin around here, but now I guess its up to me to do it all anyhow. Just because I have control about what goes on around here, I will be expected to cut the grass and maintain the farm between the bus, plant a garden (because Jacob wants to plant tomatoes), weed whack.... etc. And I suppose I will as long as this body can hold up. And as soon as I get any sass.... watch out.

Brebis.. that red girl I got from you years ago hatched 5 poults. I took the two remaining eggs out from under her, and lifted her right off, and put the babies at the food so she would eat, and teach. She could hardly walk, she'd been on the nest 4 days. Then when she staggered back to the 'nest', they scattered while I was in the back barn. Came out to see two running around the big main barn floor, and one in with the trio that are actually their parents. I think the one that got in with the trio... either they hurt its leg, or something else happened to it, before it ran in there. Its got a bum leg tho now. DAMN stupid birds. Anyhow, shes not laid an egg in eons... but put a bunch of eggs in her face, and shes instantly broody. Shes the one who sat on those other eggs and left them one cold night. And I put them in the incubator, moved them to the barn, and froze 2. Sometimes I wonder why I do stuff.

Hatching right now, two incubators full. Ran the one abit warm, it started a day early yesterday, and still hatching today, which IS the day. Brinsea started today right on time. I guess the bator was turning, there are a few hatched in there so far. All these are mostly EE's and are presold. I just love baby chicks.

I was watching the nearly month olds in the barn, and most of them are EE's. I also see quite a few of them getting nice and colourful. Boys of course. And the biggest nicest chick (which I always figured was a boy from the get go, big robust bird, thick legs... ) is developing a cross beak. Poor thing.

The Templars were a semi-independent order of knights and monks who were part of the Crusades and other battles. They grew in wealth and power and became bankers and moneylenders - often lending money to kings to fund wars. King Phillip IV of France hated the Templars as he owed them a lot. This king convinced the pope that the Templars were now worshipping the devil and severed heads. So the pope decided to arrest the Templars and charge them with heresy. In a coordinated effort in many countries, (a big deal in a time of horses and written letters), local kings overran the castles and monasteries, arrested them, and in show trials most were put to death. (To this day stories of a missing horde of treasures and gold is unaccounted for. One way to get out of debt -kill the ones you owe money to. Not to mention the "arresters" stole whatever money they found and confiscated the lands.)

the date of the arrest: Friday the 13 of October, 1307

no one has started a mount forest topic....go for it! alas, i won't be there, i'll be presenting work at a meeting that weekend.

okay. i have mystery chickens. yellow chicks that look like EO that come from the EOs (as far as i know pure breeding from the last home) that grow up to be white chicks, mottled, black spots, and pea combed. what the heck??! none of my EOs are anything but single combs. They came from brown eggs....apparently they look like leghorns, with the upright tail, sleek bodies etc. i have no white leghorns at all! and there have been no fence jumping at my place and no escapees.....everyone is in their own pen, wired floor to ceiling. sigh. so i won't be selling EOs for a while until this is figured out.....i just do not get it....these chicks would have to be E carrying, barred carrying AND mottled carrying. EOs i think carry mottled and barred, but they are wheaten. E is dominant to wheaten, and should produce an all black chick OR a solid yellow chick, and all the chicks had black flecks, like the EO chicks do.
all my leghorns are light brown - and chipmunk striped (e+/e+). all the EOs look like EOs. single comb, yellow legs, no pea or split pea combs. tinted brown eggs....and the chicks all look wheaten (like they should). but then 1/3 are feathering in white with black spots. so it has to be one of the hens.....all 3 are broody right now, sitting on eggs....a mass nest. gah. hate when things like this happen! i did have to get rid of my line of EOs-they went to a friend, but then that friend gave me back these birds, which are kids off mine crossed with another EO boy. and no fence hopping there apparently....i just don't get it!
so, test hatching coming up i guess.

chickens.

Good morning,
Started out on a wrong foot, must be the date, tried for a week to make a contact with somebody on Kijiji to buy 2 compost bins they were advertising.
After endless back and forth, trying to get an address out of the seller, all they would give me was the closest town and a concession Rd.
I was supposed to pick them up this morning, about a 45 min drive when finally they said they wouldn't give me the house # until I was on route and phoned them????????? I have decided against a "mystery" trip in to the Lanark Highlands on Friday the 13th :idunno:
Getting ready to cook and bake all wknd with all the curtains closed and completely ignoring the weather.
Hava a safe one !
