21 eggs out of 42 hatched....lost 2 of the late hatches, one was dragging a long umbilical looking cord around...didn't expect that one to make it, another I don't know what, it was a weak one that I helped out before disposing of the unhatched....and sloshy sounding eggs. The rest are doing well, lots of colors, hoping for a bunch of lil hens to replace those lost to the mink. barely had the incubator cleaned out than it was suddenly full of eggs again...grand kids laughing....oh well, whats another 20 ....or more, lol!

Honeymoon Suite is up and running. The pullets are very impressed, dropping all over the place, he is not so sure! The hens he left are VERY unhappy and vocal right now LOL!

Good morning,
Still in full blast of after-holiday energy, decided to clean out the basement, sold my spinning wheel and equipment, found some half empty paint cans DH was saving in case of paint shortages, decided to paint the basement, at least the half I didn't finish 20 years ago.
Pretty quiet in the breeding pen, wish I could send them all outside.
Little Titmouse singing on the birch tree outside my window, never saw them here before, nice new edition to out bird visitors.
Have a sunny one

And on this lovely sunny day Mr. Chunky appears to be taking his duties very seriously. At least he doesn't want to have a torrid affair with my boot like Lucky LOL!

no new calves in the past week....have 26 so far ...2 sets of live twins. Took one away from first timer...she was already starting to slim down after only 3 weeks, too much to expect from a young momma. Baby went to a friend who is starting a science farm for kids, teaching them about agriculture and sustainable living....she didn't do too well getting it on bottle so brought it back 2 days later....had a little fight with baby but after 10 minutes she finally stopped struggling and swallowed....then GUZZLED, heehee, funny baby, doing well now.
Bought 3 lil grey dutch bunnies to replace those killed by mink...this afternoon doing some major reinforcement to pen wiring. Also need to put wire on bottom of lil hen house run to keep out minky so chicks can go out....in another week or so.

This must be the day, after painting opened all windows and went to hang around the barn, air so much better smelling there, and Mactawish was having a dust / straw bath with his harem and was pretty much growling, I am hoping that was a sound of spring passion!! ;)

So Miss Wonky Toe, an older girl, had not come home as we were closing up yesterday evening. We started to search in the rain expecting to find a pile of feathers but we eventually found her standing under the neighbours manure spreader, patiently waiting for us to take her home. She got stuck on the wrong side of the fence with a large puddle in between and I suppose she didn't want to wade through it. I blame #3, a Columbian Wyandotte pullet who wanders off through the adjacent fields who she buddies up with! Hope she's OK this am.
