Yes... the price I provided was for full global access to all data.Shnookie wrote: ↑Fri Jan 26, 2018 1:01 pmThe monthly fee for Ancestry is based on what information you want to access. If you are only starting out you may want to only sign up for a few places, like North America. Once you get more information you can change your package. I did a bit of family research online a few years ago. I noticed there are a lot of spelling mistakes in names, especially on census records, and sometimes people are recorded by a middle name or nickname, not their actual name. Try searching for alternate spellings.

Re: Personal Crap but feedback helpful
the DNA searches have come down in price and its amazing how they can connect people. I heard a radio show how "anonymous" sperm donors are being found through DNA searches. Does the divorce show name and address of her laywer?
which church was she born/ married in? The catholic church is great at keeping records forever: the church you were baptised in gets updated with marriage, death records etc.

I bought the "World" membership @ Ancestry
The Special price of $79, now $129 was for their DNA test
23+me has a health & DNA test, think it is $250
The "Later Day Saints" Search group use a few different Geneology sites, but they use Ancestry the most.
They are open to the public a few days a week & they have a team who helps you search "for free"
No Leads from them, & I already had the Marriage & divorce paper work on my phone to show them
baronrenfrew, I have the name of the Church & the certificate...but I could ask if there is a more detailed record???
THANX everyone for the Great ideas, it also might be worth a shot to check the library....see ya there Epona - LOL
My mom left the country in 64, but maybe something would show up for the 10 yrs she was here?

Regina has a Genealogical Society that helps people research family histories. Local people can go there for help, and they take calls from out of town too. Maybe there is one near you that can help.

@Poultryprincess here's a thread where I asked @WLLady her opinion on the DNA tests.
Hope it helps. Happy @ Random question for any geneticists

If you don't mind, let us know from time to time how your search is going, unless of course something hurtful comes up. Good luck, I hope you turn up some interesting facts about your family and all goes well.

WLLady - what do you think about the difference in the 2 most popular DNA tests?
"GED match" will list any DNA in their data banks regardless of who did your DNA
This is SO darn interesting to me, likely because I don't know my mom's background.
Of course DH can trace his history pretty far so he just looks @ me with a

( kinda like when I prattle on about Chickens - LOL )

Re: Personal Crap but feedback helpful
Sorry this will be long and full of typos (phone).
3 different ways to do this genetics thing.
1 y chromosome typing-only males carry a copy of the y (and in some rare cases mosaics and intersexes). So the gene coding on the y is used to predict parental lineage...ie dad son grandfather great grandfather etc. If a woman wants t follow her parental (male) lineage she needs her fathers dna profile. Because she desnt carry a y chromosome.
2. Autosomal dna...this includes the non sex chromosomes. So everything except the x and y. The dna is cut into large chunks and then compared for short tandem repeats (str) its like having a sentence typed many times back to back in a book....there are diffeent numbers of repeats depending on the person and parents tend to pass them to the kids so they can be matched through generations. The thing here is it tells you who you are likely related to, just not how-son daughter mother grandfather etc. It just says you belong to that group. This is how they test for if you are scandanavian or greek or italian etc....but remember that migration occurs...so a greek might have gone to africa and had kids and then one of the kids went to russia and you are related like 200 genertions ago...it would identify all those races even though you are mainly russian....thats why the percentge. You would be very low percent greek...higher russian.
The other thing they can do is amplify pieces of the dna called snps -single nucleic polymorphisms. These are individual letter changes in the dna that tend to pass from parent to child. Some of these are also associated with greater risk of a disease or protection from a disease. We are all chicken people the e lous mutations that make a bird a birchen instead of a wheaten is actually a snp. A small base change in the dna. It gives a characteristc to the individual. These are what they look at for disease potential-we know a sod1 a4t mutation can lead to als so if you ave a sod1 a4t mutation you may get als. Thats what they are reporting as disease status. You will have lots of these snps...everyone does. And the snps are more the same in related people. You get some from your dad and some from your mom. It is very important to remember tho that just because you have the snp it does NOT mean you will get the disease. Also snps can arise spontaneously and not match either of your parents-because it started with you. And you and your brother will likely have similar snps but not identicalbecause you may not inherit all the ones your parents have because chromosomes get reorganized during the formation of the egg and sperm. So its all a probabllility of relation. The more snps in common the more likely you are related. The big there here is they cannot tell if you have 2 copies of a disease gene or a snp...or only one....and that makes a big differnce for disease causality.
And the way number 3: mitochondrial. This is your moms lineage. Mitochondria have their own dna and they are given to the egg by mom...all mitochondria are from girls. Even the mitochondria in your brother-he got them from mom. So we can follow the dna in the mitochondria and match with other mitochondrial dna to see which other girl you are related to. Mitochondrial dna however mutates fast so is only reliable back a few generations. Basically also says you are related but not if mom or daughter or sister...just related.

HOLY CRAP WLLady....how the heck do you fit all that knowledge in the same brain you fit knowledge on breeding chickens!!!!
WOW!!!! I read it a few times. I think I understand what you are getting at.
I will ponder the facts before jumping the gun - thanx for SO much interesting info on DNA
"23+me" put their DNA for ancestry & health on special til end of Jan.
$50 off, which means it will be about $200 to have both done
DNA for ancestry purposes is $130 which is what I am most interested in.
Have to weigh IF there is something @ Mount Forest I would rather spend the $ on - LOL
BIG BIG BIG THANX WLLady!!!!!
