Re: Artisanal Chicken Program
It's funny, I also remember few years ago on the now defunct PSO how many people were upset that they weren't allowed to raise any more then 100 meat chickens.
I wonder where they are now?

Re: Artisanal Chicken Program
We are signed up to start in spring. The inspection was pretty easy. Paperwork will be a breeze compared to our organic certification. We can raise them out on pasture in portable pens just like we have been doing. The only thing that it prevents us from doing that we used to do is to have any other poultry in the same field. They don't like other animals either unless there is a large time span (I forget what it was). Brush hog instead of sheep next year. We are signed up for 600. It will allow us to legally sell the chicken at market, to grocery stores and restaurants. They do have a quota for ethnic markets (silkies) but it is set up for large numbers. I have a good market for my chicken now so I don't think 600 will be a problem. The quota is per bird and works out to about 25 cents each. You can increase or decrease your numbers each year. I was told by the nice people on the phone that they will be cracking down on non-quota sales especially at farmers markets.

I thought you can already raise up to 300 without owning quota under the ?Family something programme?
