Hello From Prince Edward County
We bought a small farm in Prince Edward County. We have the well in and lot marked and the builder is waiting for a break in the cold and we will begin the building of the new house. It took a full year to get our permits, things can be different in PEC. But we look forward to the years ahead with a few critters in the County. I have not bought chickens yet as we need to get the house built and it will take some time to work up to the mixed Heritage Poultry yard I hope one day to have. I have a question about turkey's and chickens together? Does it work? Is it better to have them in separate areas? Is there a breed of Heritage Turkey's that are somewhat mellow and happy to share their space with chickens? I have been lurking since the spring, back when we thought our permits would be in hand in a few more days...but undaunted we will get there!

Re: Hello From Prince Edward County
Thanks Shnookie...that is Rory, our ex-racer/ greyhound rescue, from Kentucky and raced in Florida. He is an amazing boy, and he is my side kick. I get bad migraines and he knows before they hit and has learned to alert me to NOT get in the car and drive. No training, just something he developed and it has changed my life and my freedom; so he is a blessing and a gift!

Welcome to PTO and PEC from another PEC resident.
Re the question about chickens and turkeys together. We did have them together at times and some shared the same barn and shed and I had one hen hatch and raise a turkey poult which eventually grew up to prefer chickens to turkeys!
The main concern is they do share various diseases but the main parasite that can be a problem is Blackhead or Histomoniasis. It is endemic in most of Ontario and their is high mortalities in turkeys but chickens don’t seem to be as affected but can spread the Protozoa in their feces which can infect turkeys. There are preventative measures to take and quite a few people have little problems with it. Like most things, be prepared!
There are quite a few nice turkey breeds about and it depends on what size your looking for, some are quite large but there are now some smaller breeds too like the Beltsville small white and I’m sure others who have them will add their comments.
Have fun!
