Poultry Road Trippin' 2018

Post by JimW » Wed Jan 03, 2018 9:54 pm

January 3rd...

Well started off the new year with my first Poultry Road trip of 2018 today. I was actually not very far, about an hour away and was to pick up some poultry supplies, no birds.

Made the trip over to Ogdensburg. NY to go to my US mailbox to pick up some orders I made off of Amazon and made a stop at the TSC Store there as well.

I prefer to shop in Canada but sometime things are hard to find/not available or the price in Canada just does not make sense.

For instance I bought 2 gallon black rubber food/water pans at TSC in Ogdensburg for $8 US, even with exchange call it less than $11 Canadian. I was also at TSC store in Ontario the exact same rubber pan $30!!!! Ridiculous.

So my haul today... 3 rubber pans, 2 baby pig creep feeders (I use for chickens), 1 metal chicken feeder, some chicken vitamins, a gallon of Oxine disinfectant (suppose to be great stuff), And just to be safe with this crazy weather picked up some VetRX, Tylan 50 injectable and Duramycin 72-200 Injectable (which is an oxytetracycline).

Also picked up a few rat traps to use inside wooden boxes for weasels and a pail of rat "feed" blocks.

Gas worked out to about 92 cents a Liter as well. I filled up and saved $19 in gas, used $14 in gas plus spend $3.50 crossing bridge, so travel expenses nothing and no line up at the bridge. Plus I got some Cherry Coke Zero at the Walmart!! A good day all around.

Tomorrow will be road trip number 2 of 2018. Heading 1.5 hours East to sell a pair of Ayam cemani.....

and pick up a new chicken or two ...... or eight.

WWW, for years I hauled chickens in my trunk lol. In fact my neighbours joked about Ford doing a commercial regarding how many chickens I could fit into my little focus as a selling point!

Jim, you are truly dedicated to the cause, I thought I was nuts for driving all over but at least I stop when the snow comes, lol good for you, sounds like fun.

Good haul. Too bad we get gouged so badly in Canada. What do you use the baby pig creep feeders for?

For my baby pigs I just bought!!! Just kidding I use them for wall mounted poultry feeders in my 4 x 8 foot poultry breeder pens.

Poultry Road Trippin' 2018 .... Round 2

Post by JimW » Thu Jan 04, 2018 7:49 pm

Well today was poultry road trip number 2 of 2018. Headed East to Vankleek Hill to meet up to sell a young Ayam cemani pair.

While I was there I went to the Vankleek Hill Country Depot and picked up a couple bags of Windy Field Farms No GMO, No Soya Poultry feed, it looks like great stuff. I little expensive compared to my regular local poultry mash, but I am going to give it a try, thinking I will ferment it and feed small amounts a couple times a week. If I like it I will probably buy a bunch directly from Windy Field Farms next time I am down that way.

Second stop on my little trip was Rarefield Heritage Farm to pick up some more Cuckoo Malines chickens. I love these birds big, meaty and can sex the day old chicks, looking forward to producing eggs and chicks in 2018. Rarefield also breeds rare San Clemente Island Goats, they are pretty cool looking, no room for goats here.

My last stop of the day was at Finch Feed & Seed they sell Goldfields Dust Extracted chopped straw bedding, I have wanted to try it for awhile, so I picked up a couple bags to try.

At home tonight watching World Junior hockey and building a weasel trap box or two. Maybe do some school work or look through vegetable seed catalogues. I think looking at seed catalogues will win out or maybe planning road trip #3.

I would really like to try that dust extracted straw bedding. Where is Finch Feed and Seed located, @JimW ?

I've bought Windy Fields' stuff twice now, and except for the price, liked it. Birds hoovered it, maybe a little TOO much, so I ended up cutting it with regular feed, which sort of defeats the purpose of feeding non-gmo/no soy to begin with lol
They will deliver if there's a big enough order, and have a bunch of regular drop-off points over a fairly large geographic area
