How cold is too cold?

Post by Ontario Chick » Thu Dec 28, 2017 9:16 pm

Although I am a firm believer in the theory that there is no bad weather, just inappropriate clothing, this is pushing things a bit too far???
Places colder then Ottawa yesterday, Ulan Bator and North and South Pole !!!!
The hockey tournament on Parliament Hill was moved indoors, because it was so cold the Ice on the outdoor ring kept cracking!
I guess this is going to be a winter of the Polar vortex, I would have liked to have a bit more time to forget what the last one felt like. ;)

If I thought it would make a difference, I'd organize a party to spray aerosol cans and burn styrofoam. So yeah, I'm having flashbacks of the one 3 and 4 winters ago when the septic froze and broke and we had to use an outhouse in -40 and other people were having their well heads freeze.
No plumbing freeze-ups here yet, but it's still only December.
I KNEW on Solstice that I should have lit a big (carbon fuel) bonfire and done a Sun dance LOL!

Uphill to school in bare feet both ways?? Lol
I have seen -50c ONCE and i can honestly say i do not ever want to see it again....and that was -50 without any wind. Breath froze in the air. Tears froze right inside your eyes!!! Could not be out for more than a minute.

Just keeping my fingers crossed that my barn water stays running.....so far so good.....

Had to open door from cold storage in to the basement to warm it up, was darn near ZERO, but that means the basement is getting tad cold!
Brought rest of apples from cold storage in to the fridge to warm up ;) might have to do the same thing with vine and garlic.
Wanted to do a quick run to grocery store before the masses descend in preparation for a long wknd, but the 4Runner will not start, first time ever!!!!
If we didn't need milk I would just abandon the whole shopping thing.

I've had to thaw out the water pipes in the barn every day since the freeze started and they are enclosed with that heated cord around them plus a bulb.

It's not warming up until a few days after the New Year. It was -42 here one night. Our sauna drain froze up, but hubby got it thawed out. People in town (Thunder Bay) are having lots of freezing pipes. Lots of cars on the side of the road from freezing up and cars not starting. The towing company and other businesses have been busy with this cold weather. The poor people that have to work out in this cold, such as, mail delivery people, police officer investigating accidents, etc you gotta feel for. I'm glad I'm not one of those persons. Take care everyone who has to go outside, as frost bite can happen very quickly.

I discovered that the car I got just over a year ago doesn’t have a block heater. Didn’t even think about it last winter but sure found out when the car wouldn’t start on Boxing Day. Well I’m rather cheap so rigged up a hairdryer to blow near the engine and works like a dream and it’s started every morning so far! Only problem is, I’ll have to get another hairdryer before the kid comes back and needs it again!
Just managing to keep the water for the birds mostly frost free but the roosters wattles are looking rather frostbitten.

It's -28 here with a wind chill about -45. The sun is out, but it doesn't help much.
