OC you are absolutely right. I once tried to explain to a friend that even if I was saving $100 on the item she was trying to convince me to buy I would still be spending $100 on something I didn't really need. She could not understand my argument. At the risk of sounding all together (which I most definitely am not) I think that a lot of people have their self-worth tied up in stuff. I've worked 25 or so boxing days (which are now boxing weeks and I'm sure someday the retail God's will find a way to stretch it out further) and I see hot money burning holes in people's pockets all the time. I also see all of the "show-me" gifts find their way back into the store lol.

Every once in a while i get the "man, that would be so nice to have" sensation roll over me and then i snap out of it and realize that I managed just fine thus far without it...I am by no means in the know, but it seems to me that shopping is the recreation of the masses now...people don't do much...I mean it's a generalization I am aware, but really, how many 65" tvs does one household need?...stand in line for a deal on something. I really don't need?...not in this lifetime..lol..and I agree with OC..Sunday shopping should never have been allowed..

Boxing day turned into boxing week somewher along the way. I dont understand this "must buy everything whether we need it or not" mentality....i even avoid grocery shopping!!! The people are cranky. The lots are insane. The traffic sucks. And its all me me me.

I don't get the people who say they don't have time for family, don't have time for friends, don't have time for any type of participation in the spiritual sense of the holiday, and yet tell you proudly that they stood in line during freezing temperatures since two in the morning just to get the latest icrap or whatever on boxing day!

Nah. I think I have done Boxing Day shopping once or twice in my life, probably when the kids were little, to exchange a gift. I prefer to avoid it.

I avoid shopping around holidays altogether, (I am still boycotting Sunday shopping, never should have been allowed in the first place), I am completely immune to any kind of advertising that is trying to get me in the store promising bargains and deals if I only show up on Saturday with all the people who actually believe they are getting a deal.
There seems to be an interesting mentality that comes across from people who line up for hours or possibly days for running shoes, newest iPhone , largest TV or latest whatever, they appear to be desperate for feeling of being part of something happening, whatever it may be??? Sorry just don't get it.

So I gave it a further thought (because apparently I have nothing better to do )
and since I lived in the political system you mentioned and even the one you didn't, :)
I think there must be more to it then that, possibly a "line up" gene I am totally missing.
I do remember very clearly from my oh so far away childhood, people lining up at the end of a line at the whatever store and then asking what is it that the line is for.
Our family never lined up for anything and we have survived 3 different political systems all based on shortages with a purpose of keeping population "in line" so they would be too busy to start a revolution ?? just sayin. :)

Yes, to the last part. Also distracting people are cell phones and the apps on them, as well as the legalization of certain drug use, which is also a tax grab because our government is broke.

I agree OC, I still think Sunday shopping should have never been allowed either. Sunday was set aside for church, family and a "day of rest" Society has become a "need it yesterday" or should be able to get it "24/7". Holidays especially it seems to bring out the worst, I seem to notice more aggressive, rude people out then, not what the season is about and it makes me sad. I shop early and make sure groceries are done at least 5 days before and for sure nothing I need bad enough to stand in line for Boxing Day sales.

I think the saddest thing I have ever seen was a commercial on TV showing young mothers with small children, according to the advert "making memories" by heading to Walmart !!!!!
I thought how sad, that shopping has become an entertainment and there isn't one day in the week when there is time to do something completely different and the retail workers have time off just like everybody else ?
