These alert posts are not what will shut down the bird fairs and auctions: it's the diseases that will kill them.
Forewarned is forearmed: I am glad to be informed that there is a problem so that I can take steps to minimize the risk to my birds. If there is a threat of ILT in my area, I appreciate knowing about it so that I can do things like sanitize my shoes and vehicle tires after I've been to a feed store or a bird auction or fair.
Why?
Because for all I know someone has pulled up into the same public venue with a vehicle or with footwear that has been exposed to pathogens and is spreading it around.

More information we have, better chance we will be able to protect our flocks from diseases and irresponsible people who don't know any better and are too lazy to educate themselves.

Re: ILT in Prescott Russell (7 Oct 2017)
McDonald's Corners auction refused to remove visibly sick birds from the sale, because they belonged to one of the volunteers and the organizer was worried about "repercussions", presumably that they would lose that volunteer in the future.
IMO, if they can't get their act together, the sale SHOULD be shut down. If we can't police ourselves and stay away from known hotspots, shut sales down temporarily until the danger passes, then CFIA will be happy to step in and police poultry keepers. Their number one priority in illness situations, is the health of commercial poultry barns. If we as hobbyists are running from county to county selling and buying poultry willy-nilly, we aren't just endangering our own flocks, we are endangering the food supply and big $$ for farmers and for government. I know people who knew about the current alert in Lanark county and went to the McD. sale anyway. It's people like that that will end up making it harder for the rest of us.

And what I will say for the CFIA is when the Avian Influenza was detected they held phone conferences (thanks Troy and all for organising) so we small poultry keepers could be kept informed and aware. We all need to be vigilant!

Re: ILT in Prescott Russell (7 Oct 2017)
To be honest as someone with a bit of education on illnesses but not a lot (or enough) I'm terrified to purchase any birds at a sale. Not because I believe the hobby is full of unscrupulous people but because anything could be at those sales. WWW agree with you. Anyone that sells or purchases birds needs to be educated, aware and transparent. For now I'd far prefer to meet a breeder one on one to purchase birds or chicks.
