Just put my order in at veseys last night. treating myself to some new unbroken pots for starting things like tomatoes....that will be a novelty. getting some of the "kits" with the pots and watering mat and tray and stuff. all the seed except for garlic (already planted) and potatoes. i'll order the potatoes closer to the date. So all the annual seed, and vegetables for the garden. Last time i grew corn was years ago and the dogs broke through the garden fence and ate it to the ground, stalks and all, so this year is my first year back into doing corn. sweet corn and bayvistafarm had some ornamental corn i really liked so she gave me a dried cob to break apart for seed. :chores:

looks like i'll have to plant some of the sweet potato shoots this weekend, they're going nuts in that west window...maybe move them into a north window to stop growing so fast! makes me want to get the greenhouse cleaned up...but it's too cold out there (normally) for that! Can't wait to play in the dirt again! i'm just growing the normal stuff, herbs, peppers, tomatoes, beans, carrots, baking beans, potatoes, pumpkins, squash, going to try watermelon this year, zucchini, lettuce, corn....cucumbers....um....sweet potatoes....um.....sunflowers, lots of those, the heads are great chicken treats in the fall and early winter.

I went on Ebay.. and bought the same purple corn/red corn and also some ornamental corn from the seedhouse. They are not very far from here, really. New Hamburg. I wonder why you can't just go there, or buy on line, instead of Ebay.

The only thing I like about winter here...a cup of coffee and exploring through seed catalogs! We buy most of our varieties from The Cottage Gardener, but a few others we have grown to like are Urban Harvest (Toronto I believe), High Mowing (vermont) West Cost Seeds (BC) and Joesph Simcox's site out of the US for rare new things for seed keeping. All of our green manures and cover crops come from William Dam though. Also, I love trading seeds with others for some great diversity.I have become known as the guy my friends bring seeds to if they get their hands on any, which really helps give us some great diversity in our collection. I think we must be at around 350 different types of seed by now ...unfortunately some of those are almost depleted after last year. My pride and joy is our tomato seed collection with 62 different varieties now.

We usually try and keep a lot of our own seed, but had some big issues last year. Many of the varities I have stored will run out this year and will have to be replaced by either bought or saved seeds. We are almost done the greenhouse construction here (20x48') so opefully that will really help us this year. We are really aiming to be able to sell started plants as well as grown out vegetables this time around. We had a massive failure with our tomatoes last year, which basically filled a freezer and some cans, but not the store...so I am hoping to try and make sure we have some income from starters early in the season to buffer any potential losses later in the season.

The Organic Conference at the University of Guelph is coming up very soon and is a great place to meet lots of the smaller seed companies and get their product...usually at a lower "trade show" price. I go with some mad money every year!

Had a look at William Dam seeds online today, I was pretty impressed with their varieties and prices, particularly for 'bulk' seeds.
I thought I was well set up for seeds this year, but Richard has decided to go big and is planning to till an acre. So I have to fill it :) and I spent three days poring over catalogs, making lists, and have my orders ready to go. I'll be ordering from OSC, Vesey's and Dam's, with Dam's getting the bigger order by far. With the price of produce up so high, and expected to continue to rise, I consider seeds a wise investment! No way in you-know-where, am I EVER going to pay $8 for a head of cauliflower.

Jan William Dam Seed's are great, nice people to deal with. Thankfully they are close to me so I just go and pick up my seeds.

Have my list ready and am heading there today :wee:

After a shipping error by the post office I recieved my corn seeds on Tuesday. and it would seem the seller gave me an extra half a pound of Peaches n cream. funny thing is they are packed 50 seeds per package. I have something like 3500 seeds. LOL! I also received 4 catalogs. we already have a mini seed bank that I did inventory on so now we need to plan everything out and see what seeds we want to add. with the corn or at least some of it I want to plant the 3 sisters way, 1 corn seed, 1 bean seed and one squash/cucumber or pumpkin. has anyone ever done this?

i still need a tiller...

come on spring!!!
