Everything I hatch myself: chicks, poults, ducklings and goslings, until they're big enough to go out and range. It's cheap and convenient :)And they don't scratch or fling it around if it's mashed.

What about if a broody hen does the hatching and raising? Would she be ok with dog food mash as well?

As JimW said, thanks for the tip on the dog kibble WWW. I have given the chickens dry cat food in the winter when they are stuck inside and after a molt but I like the idea of the soaked dog kibble!! Thanks! :hi5:

Thinking ahead there Jaye, lol  Hope Gracie can hatch those Brabies for you :fingersx:

IMO a broody should be fine and would likely appreciate the extra protein. My broodies eat the same as the chicks so...

Yes, thanks, @windwalkingwolf - a very timely tip. I was not looking forward to paying for a bag of chick starter AND a bag of grower for (hopefully) a half dozen Brabanters chicks, especially after having just purchased another bag of layer mash.

@Flat Rock Farm , yes, planning ahead and hoping she hatches out those Brabie eggs too. :broodyhen:

So you could give it to Turkey chicks as well??? The cheap dog food is usually $16 on sale, so better than the non medicated food at $20+.

I didn't know baby turkeys were actually cute at first, now I think I need some as well as ducks lol. I wish there were mini turkeys or bantam turkeys.

Baby turkeys are awesomely cute and sweetly dumb. Beltsvilles are small (although not bantam size). My big Tom is maybe 25lbs.

Sure Ross, more my size! Those are about the only pigeons I really like, I have been thinking about getting a pair, just something different to look at when people visit.
