Baron, why drive all the way there when I can get them to come here for ten, that's a good deal.
The thing is it shows a lot of people don't know the value of their chickens, many are selling their 1 1/2 to 2 years old hens for $15 to $20, why would I buy a 2015 model for $15 when I can get ready to lay for$10. A lot of people see good breeders asking $10 to $15 for chicks so they get greedy and ask the same, but there is a difference between someone who has been breeding for years to someone who is looking to make a quick buck. I think a lot of people have heard the prices for hatching eggs and think, wow I can ask $25 for my silkie/Wyandott/barred rock mixed chickens, not realizing the work someone put into getting to the point of asking $25 for a dozen hatching eggs. I know it's stupid but it bugs me, it's like taking credit for someone else's work and breeders like the people on here are trying to add something to the poultry world, where as many on line are just trying to cash in on the current popularity of poultry.

Not just trying, SR, but succeeding. Between December and April, mutt chicks and questionable eggs sell like hotcakes for silly amounts of money, because someone got a new incubator or coop, or had a predator loss, and don't want to wait for quality birds ( or are too lazy to source them ). Backyard mix chicks seem to have quadrupled in price in the past 6 years or so, but the people still pricing them reasonably can't get a sale or are selling them at auctions for pennies. Makes me a little nuts!
I'm going to try to sell some day old Cookies and Cream chicks for $25 each. Ok, not really, but they'd probably sell.

Yep. I've been keeping an eye out for THE dog for months, and regularly come across ads for Morkies and Boxshires and Labradoxers and and and, running about 1200 for the larger breeds and often over $2000 for the toys. I often wonder who the people are that are buying them...is it a case of too much money, too few brains?

I call these ones "Cookies and Cream" for the boys, which are darker, and "Cream and Cookies" for the girls. It's a barring that seems to work opposite of what it's supposed to. Should be worth $100 for a pair, I think :D

I know more about dogs than I do about chickens and am mortified about the stoopid Doodles (and the wild prices that some of these "breeders" charge for them). Why take two excellent breeds and muck them up? Is it the same with chickens? I've just ordered some Sex Link chickens and now I have learned that they are hybrids.....

I think there's value in "mutts". Whether in the chicken world or dog world or whatever. Completely agree tho that things have gotten a bit crazy. I saw a posting claiming an olive egger to be purebred. It seems that at the moment if it came from an egg other than regular brown, white or cream it's a hot commodity. I'm grateful that there's dedicated breeders that work to preserve and restore breeds but the buyers pool for those folks is much smaller. It's like the average Joe is looking for the latest gadget. What's this chicken do that's special that I can SEE. Doesn't matter that it's genetically sound, ETHICALLY raised (which is a big one for me) and preserves a breed for future enjoyment. Same way society built puppy mills.
I've seen some pics of chickens/chicks/eggs for sale for crazy prices and TBH there's some I would never support because of conditions visible in their own photos. Which is one of the reasons I found this forum...In my quest to not purchase questionable stock produced in questionable conditions from a hatchery. I know my goals in poultry are different than many here. I will be selling a few chicks and maybe even some hatching eggs down the road more because I enjoy it. With the price of hydro running an incubator I certainly won't be making money. Like anything "trendy" buyers must be more savvy. So know that as reputable sellers I'm not sure you want the masses as your customers anyways.

Absolutely!

As long as people buy before they educate themselves and as long as having something different is a status symbol and as long as people have more money then good sense there will be market for purebred olive eggers, labradoodles and miniature Great Danes.
Don't get me wrong I have absolutely nothing against a person who find exactly what they want and pay the asking price, thats what pays the feed bill for the people who do the work, so we can buy what we want when we want it.
I have been known to lift my hand at an Auction and leave it there until I got what I wanted, but I did know what I was buying

Sex link chickens from places like Freys are generally very good birds and a good way to start out. I loved my black sex linked birds and they laid well. When I started I bought 10 Ready to Lay birds from Freys and was very happy with what I got. Tamed very fast. There is another type of sexlinkage in pure birds like Isbars etc. I'm hoping Kathy or someone will chime in here.
