1. Is there a list of acronyms and what they stand for? e.g., BST.
2. Do you know if there will be a small animal auction in the Rideau Lakes area?

bst is buy sale trade. im not sure of any others though but I havent attended very many sales.

There are sales all around you about an hour or so away. There's the EBBA sale at Vernon, then McDonald's Corners (Lanark), then there's a sale at Bay of Quinte sale at Shannonville, the sale at South Mountain (past Kemptville); the dates for the last two sales are not out yet. The South Mountain sale is usually in April. Then there's a buy/sell/trade day in Renfrew in May. Not to mention the George Jones sales near Chesterville. Thanks! I believe it is the auction in McDonald's Corners that I was curious about and missed it last year. I'll mention this to my husband to see if we are ready for some rabbits or if we just want to be spectators to see what it's all about. We are not ready for goats - no fenced-in yard yet.

If you have never been to a poultry or animal auction, I would suggest go as just a spectator to your first one, just to watch and check out quality of animals and prices.

You can get good birds/animals for a good price at auctions, but you can just as easily get caught up in the excitement of bidding and seeing all the stock and end up buying animals for more than they are really worth. There is usually lots of good stock at auctions, but some keepers also use auctions to "dump" poor quality animals.

I need to pay particular attention to animals at Sunday Auctions, if there was an auction not too far away on the Saturday. Some people will buy animals cheap on the Saturday and then flip them on Sunday to make a quick buck.

I love auctions, mainly to see what is out there, but definitely buyer before.

P.S. bring a flashlight.

A friend bought a "pair" of rabbits at Renfrew last year. Wondered why the doe never had kits...I just processed them for her. The buck was neutered.

Thanks, JimW. Indeed, I would be going as an observer just to see what is available, quality, prices, procedure, etc.
However, not sure if husband is interested in doing that this year. Oh well.
