What's up with these eggs?

Couple weird eggs. Hmm. One is lopsided and the other looks like it was dyed? Has a sort of bullseye. Shells not soft (thick, if anything). Normal interior.

so the first one was laid a little bit early, before the shell hardened, and gravity made it squish a little bit. the other one looks like it got an extra coating of "bloom" on it, the discolouration can happen if it sits in the litter for a period of time. i'm not sure if its that urea will fade the bloom, or it reacts with the water in the air or what. you will find that the second one, when you get it wet in the sink, will look totally normal and then redry to look like that.

now if you get lots of "lopsided" or squished eggs with folds in the shells, AND you have a bunch of coughing chickens it can be ILT. but if your chickens aren't sick, and you haven't found lots of these eggs then it's not that.

Lopsided eggs can also happen when a big randy rooster climbs on at just the wrong moment. Nothing to worry about at all unless it's a regular thing.

Some of mine coming out of moult sometimes do this type. Clears up normally.

On this same subject sort of, what makes a chicken lay an egg with no shell? Just membrane? In five years, I seem to get about one a year. I feed limestone grit and they free range, so I don't think minerals are a problem. And now that I think of it, more often than not, below the perch, not in the laying box, sort of like they laid them at night not knowing they were laying.

My RSLs have laid a squishy egg off the perch on occasion, it was usually after they had laid one in the nest box earlier in the day, so either a 2-egg day, or an early for the next day, both have happened.

It happens when 2 eggs are close together in the tract. The first gets the shell and the second is close enough it doesnt register as a new egg needing shell but not so close that it ends up in the same shell. If it happens a lot there is a calcium issue but you will usually get weak shells first yhen shell-less. Getting one off and on is nothing to worry about.
