Woody woodpecker

Look what this guy is doing to my trees, I watched him and he strips off the bark. Yes these are ash trees and probably have the emerald ash borer. I have about 10 of these trees I have to take down.
Here's the trees.

Here's a picture of the kind of bird doing it, he's quite large a little bigger than a crow.

They do it to my trees too, but I don't have any ash standing. They have totally stripped one tree that is leaning on another tree. If you watch long enough you can see them fly away with strips of bark.

Nest making material and lunch in one fell swoop, very convenient.
Careful with transporting ash trees, you will be transporting the borer larvae too.

Watch out for falling branches!! I have seriously 100s of these trees on my farm...all falling. I Should get someone in to cut them...we could use the firewood.
Sadthe borer is so destructive but the flickers and woodpeckers and skunks love the borer larva. Well i yhink this borer is pretty much everywhere now but omafra website will probably have a notice about moving firewood from place to place. I know down here it was lifted because everyone has the borer

I used to have 2 beautiful big ash right beside my coop. When they died they died fast and one split in half and luckily got hung up in the other dead one or it would have come down on the coop! I was in it at the time! They came down last spring along with 6 others and we are burning it now but let me tell you it burns FAST! Thank God we had other hardwood that came down at the same time.

Yeah its not the best burning wood. But theres lots of it lol and no good for anything else unfortunately once the bugs find it.

It's everywhere now anyway, you will not stop them.

WOW that Wood Pecker is making fast work of that tree! crazy! not his fault, at least hes helping eleviate the problem somewhat.

pretty much all of southern Ontario is contaminated with the borer so the wood can legally be transported throughout that area. BUT its highly discouraged and some municipalities have imposed there own restrictions. there is a map and lots of details online. I enjoy burning the ash and never had a problem with it however I haven't burned any other hard wood so I cant compare it to others. I have only cut dead trees for firewood, all ash. I'm just happy I live and camp in the same county so I can transport it there worry free.

We used to have signs everywhere saying you couldn't transport firewood into our area, it didn't help as you see , now the signs are gone.
It's a shame these are big beautiful trees, the picture shows some smaller ones but I'm afraid of them coming crashing down. They are so tall though I'll have to rent an cherry picker machine to cut them down. I'd leave them for the woodpecker but they are up around the house.
