Good Morning!
I knew a guy that kept fancy pheasants...he always kept a few coturnix in the same pen. If a weasel got in...it hit the easiest targets first. If coturnix were dropping...RED ALERT!
Al, you're killing me dude. Dry wood gives twice the heat of "not so dry" wood. So you need half as much. I have dry wood outside, its ok but the stuff I have in the shed (it was put there in August) burns way hotter. Gonna build an extra wood shed.

Good Morning!
I know exactly what your saying Baron. these trees have been dead a long time thanks to the ash borer. it burns absolutely perfect cut and split then burned right away. no moisture oozes out of the wood at all and it starts right up without kindling. I do wish I had a moisture meter though and a bigger tractor. LOL. I do what I can. I am working on trying to get a head of myself though, it would be nice to be cutting wood a year a head of time. I've set myself a goal and a place that I want to fill up cut n split wood, pretty much the entire length of the house n garage between the pines. I think a big part of why its so dry is due to the crazy wind get here. speaking of which tore a few shingles off the house last night!!! CRAP!
well I gotta go be a roofer now... have a great day all!

Good Morning!
Ya I know but I already had my name on list of hatching eggs in the spring so I should be able to replace most, just will be a year behind breeding myself.

On the plus side, I found a breeder downsizing, so in a couple weeks, I will hopefully be picking up some 1 and 2 year old malines, bielefelder and cream legbar chickens to add new blood from some good quality birds to my existing groups. :)

Good Morning!
Good morning,
Jim, did the rest and relaxation, wear off yet? Seems like there was a whole bag of work just waiting for you to get back.
I grow suspicious of holiday time, you work double to get everything ready and then double to fix all that went wrong when you were away the math of the time off doesn't really add up :)
DH assessment of the my cockerels and roosters, they all look great????? Now I am a bit worried.
Windy and warm here, the wood furnace is off, can't get any draft when it gets this warm.
So far this winter seems ON & OFF & ON & OFF, the Rideau canal isn't frozen yet, crazy weather.
Keep safe!

Good Morning!
well thats great news Jim! it still sucks being set back a year. those birds are not cheap, same with the hatching eggs. Id like to get back into them one day, but for now im just working with what I have.
No doubt OC! I think it goes like this, winter in the morning, spring in the afternoon and fall in the evening. LOL.
My landlord has a professional roofer coming, which is great cuz its a very steep pitch, not one I'm comfortable on even with a harness and roof jacks. I used to be very comfortable on any roof as a teen and in my early 20's. I dont know what happened but I'm not the same up there.
I just met the head coyote hunter in the area, still systematically removing them. he had one of his dogs out running a fox across the road. gps collar and all, he pushed a button, called the dog once and it came right back to him and jumped in the crate. WOW what a well trained dog! hes taken out 13 coyotes in the last month or so, 2 yesterday. I thanked him quite a bit, explaining how I keep poultry and all the losses I suffered at the old place, but none here to coyotes. hes such a great guy and he sure is doing the areas wildlife and me a huge favor. tip my hat to him and his crew.

Good Morning!
OC,
Rest and relaxation. I think I am more tired after our trip than before it. I got luck and had a great guy looking after my birds when I was gone, they were probably better taken care of when I was gone. lol
Now I am itching to get breeding pens made so I can separate the birds, as some of my pullets are starting to lay. All of my chickens are 2016, so I will not be collecting any eggs for hatching until late spring, to ensure good fertility with the new roosters and give time for decent sized eggs.

Good Morning!
al, sorry to hear about the roof, glad the landlord will deal with it! i haven't even looked around today to see where things ended up.....the bale of hay is still in the field with horses attached, so that's the main thing here.....
slow day today. is it a bad thing when just having a shower is work? i did manage to fill up the cat food and water upstairs, and get dirty clothes into the washer (but not on, because hydro prices suck) i really need to get moving....go walking or something. i'm very glad that the weather has calmed down, yesterday was crazy with the blowing snow and sleet and hail and freezing rain.....it's all pretty much melted now except some big ice puddles.
Jim, glad you got the beast, but sorry it got so many birds first.
okay. i better go and do something.....being entirely too lazy today.
