Yup... right next door to me.. Dam's.... and they have a beautiful catalogue and free!! And, yup, come visit if you go to visit the store... but they ship as well.

On the picture where their sign is.... you can see the trees in the distance, that is our laneway!!

Every seed packet I have ever purchased there has grown wonderfully!! Even the melons. Wonder what happened with yours?

I am still stuck on the part where you are starting a garden on a new turf, where there is grass now :)
You may want to talk to Jan about that one.
From a very old gardener point of view, smaller your "starter" garden, better chance at success.
You will have hard time keeping the beds weed free, so small seeds are going to be difficult to germinate and grow before the Happy weeds are going to take over.
Like baron said mulching an absolute must, and best starter garden where there has never been garden before is potatoes, mulched with about 6" of straw.

Heritage Seed Company in Manitoba have a terrific selection of seeds..all heritage..no hybrids at all..huge listing and a really interesting g read on each variety and it's origins to them ..no pictures but great catalog...typical 3$ packet pricing but the sweet part is that seeds are true if you save them at seasons end...so that cuts down next year's costs...altho with the tomatoes it's difficukt as they have so many varieties that I want to try different o es every year....

OC's suggestion of starting with raised beds is a great plan. you have a better controlled environment and easier on your back. we tend to think like a farmer where a machine or horse breaks the land and plants are in straight lines and long fields. if you want long term success (and less work) think "out of the farmer's box" and more to what the plants need and like and to what works. books worth checking out : chicken tractor (put birds in moving pens and let them till);

I am a seed-o-lic not just a chicken-o-lic. I order from several place. Dam's, terra edibles, Eagle Creek, backyard diva, ritcher's, veseys, osc and.......If you want to stick with Ontario, try The Cottage Gardener. I have always been happy with my many orders and they are easy folks to deals, with. Outside of Province you could check out Hope Seeds as well. I'm big on open pollinated, heirloom seeds so those are two of my favorite places.
New ground is a nightmare in my opinion. Tarp the area now and mulch with news paper or cardboard once planted and then mulch over that with round up free straw. Good luck and enjoy.

My rototiller was a 8 hp ........ red and white. Sold at a yard sale. Guy offered her $50 and she took it, before I even realized they were talking about it. It was around 10 - 12 years old and never had a problem with it. Grrr.

I know this is out of the farmer's box like @baronrenfrew mentions. Well, a lot out of the box...
Try one of these, no need to till, it does it for you. And plant, and weed (!), and water.... And if you build a greenhouse around it, it works all year long ...

Yeah. Avoid breaking sod any way possible...you will have ten kinds of crab grass and weeds you never knew existed suddenly think your beds are just for them, and it will be a full time job to stay ahead of them. The crab grass roots will travel under your beds straight through root vegetables and you will kill yourself pulling handfuls of the crap for hours at a time. If you can fence off the area you're going to garden, and borrow a potbelly pig, the piggy will turn the soil, fertilize, eat all the weed and grass roots and put the fear of Pig in them lol
