But on the serious side, something is wrong, she may not be seeing correctly or sometimes their homing signal is off kilter and they can't find their way back, or she took too long hatching, that's not normal.

Maybe she got caught unawares at dusk, and by the time she realized it was time to go home, it was too dark for her see or make out familiar landmarks? It tends to get dark at different times of the day this time of year because of different weather conditions (overcast, snowing, raining, etc).Skinny rooster wrote:But on the serious side, something is wrong, she may not be seeing correctly or sometimes their homing signal is off kilter and they can't find their way back, or she took too long hatching, that's not normal.

Guinneas & turkeys will do that . Just set where they are when dark appears .

Funny you should mention turkeys and guineas doing the same thing, I had the one free range Tom do the same thing last week, I noticed a white flash as we pulled in the drive and thought what the heck is Polo doing out still! It was pitch black by then and he was in the side yard between the house and barn. Had to get the flashlight and light his way back to the barn-he's not friendly enough to pick up! Silly turkeys!!!
Hope your hen is OK

Just as long as she didn't "cross the line"....then she'd be in definite trouble.....

Ha! Ha! Stupid bird, my cat used to lye down on the centre line in the road for a nap, I'd be out there chasing him off the road with a broom. He did end up getting killed on the road but he was 14 years old and was running away from another cat. He was the friendliest nicest cat, I still miss him.
