word of warning on the italian plum.....if you plant them you will be swamped with plums!!!!!! LOL.

we are looking at putting trees up the driveway this coming spring, and i think putting either sugar maples or fruit trees would make the most sense-we already have 2 plums and 2 apples and 2 cherry trees, both the pear trees didn't make it, maybe i should try a different cultiver, those were bosc (sp?) and were supposed to be good to zone 5 but then we got -30 2 years in a row and they're now done.

JimW-where is eagle creek? i usually get seed potatoes from Veseys in PEI, but the shipping is getting too expensive...would prefer local.....but the ones from my feed store just didn't cut it last year.

i look for under $1 a plant! i see they are pricey if you just get say 25, but it gets better once you're talking 100 plants or more.... I'm looking for day neutral, probably upwards of 75 /100 for myself personally, wonder if theres enough interest in more? maybe we could do a group buy?

On fruit trees:

Green Barn Nursery has the largest selection of "uncommon" fruits: chum (cherryxplum) plumcot (plum x apricot), northern peaches! and many others: good place to go for a workshop: great developers of fruits (i.e. Asian pears) but crummy business people: you are warned (some stuff in their catalog is marked up and resold from somewhere else)
Windmill point farm; Whiffle tree, the tree hustler; all are related from a family "business" disagreement and split: Whiffle Tree owned by an Amish family so you might do better there

Thanks Baron I have most of those places bookmarked. Im on a budget but want a bunch of fruit trees. Would you recommend my approach of buying combination trees to start with, then graft and spread out over the years? The ones im interested in come from http://www.whiffletreefarmandnursery.ca ... s/2023.htm they are all cold hardy varieties including the rootstock.

hey another question... since that rootstock is a semi dwarf, can the grafts be placed on a regular cold hardy rootstock and grow to a natural size?

Im very interested in attending some fruit tree workshops but will have to find the time and work it in...

Ill look at the rest of the sites later...

THANK MAN!

Yep, If you graft onto a standard root stock, you'll get a standard size tree. The rootstocks are chosen for disease resistance: its the only way to keep plums going; plums get hammered by black knot.

Doing your own cloning (grafting), good plan.

I lost our plums to black knot, tried everything to no avail. They were tiny like a damson with the most wonderful fruit. I have one jar of the jam left in the cupboard now!
