Propane. Electric. Carbon Tax.

I have a 27 yr old furnace. Seldom gets used in the winter as we manage with firewood. However, last year we had to take the woodstove in basement out of commission (safety) and of course the year got ahead of me and I can't get one installed now until December and because the chimney needs to be redone, they won't guarantee it in December because of snow and working conditions. That is about $4700 for the complete job.

Well, here I was ready for a propane furnace. Finally made up my mind. Woodstove would wait till following season. Then this carbon tax crap came in. Now I'm caught in a wind storm (aka as my brain). Electricity rates are ridiculous. Carbon tax is going to hurt propane and make the 'rate/tax' comparable to electric rates.

Propane, electric, I just can't seem to get to the point of agreement in my head for a decision.

@TomK, what is your furnace? Gas/propane or electric? I'm seriously considering solar for next year if you use electric run by your solar.

Im curious and appreciate the sharing of opinions, knowledge and thoughts.

I think you're right satellite. That's why this decisions isn't coming easily.

Does anyone know if there's gonna be a carbon tax on Oil for oil furnaces ?

Sandy...my solar runs the house electrically . The heating system is a propane fired high efficiency boiler feeding total radant floor heating as well as domestic hotwater. We use a really nice high end wood stove most of the time for the main heating as I have a sizeable woodlot and a house design that is open concept that allows the warm air to circulate more easily. Propane is my option as oil is frowned on by insurance companies. I am currently looking at preheating water with solar but havent made any final decisions on that yet. There is no sane way to heat a house electrically using solar at present. The system woukd be too cost restrictive.

For sure carbon tax on oil..and gas and propane and if they have their way on the commercial wood lot guys too....

Tom you can put together a preheat water system yourself very cheaply using old patio door glass (non Low E) black painted corrugated steel pipework and a pump. Had it in Orillia and it worked well.

it cost us $200/month to heat our house with strictly propane. the wood stove sure makes a huge difference. we also live in a century old farm house that has been extremely updated in terms of insulation. all the walls and celing have been blown in, the crawl space has been sprayed with a foot of spray foam. it cost way less to heat this house on propane than the old, much smaller house on oil. our funace here is only a few years old and all the duct work is brand new. theres only one vent upstairs however we have those holes in the floor to allow the air to circulate. we turned the furnace on when we got home Sunday night, today im cutting firewood.
