Mystery Hitchhiker - What Breed?

Post by Chicken Ninja » Fri Aug 05, 2016 1:30 am

Hey all, so a local friend called us up last night telling us they found a big black rooster just walking down their rural dirt road. They asked around, and no one seems to be missing him. He's a really nice guy, good manners, seems very healthy, so we've got him with us while we wait for someone to claim him. Seems like a show bird - he jumped into his temporary rabbit hutch home. His spurs may have been doctored, there is a large rim of scales a little bit around his spurs - maybe the outer casing was pulled off? Anyway, since we think he may be a show bird, he probably looks pretty close to the SOP for some Single Comb Clean Legged large fowl breed. Our thoughts were Jersey Giant, Orpington, Rock and Australorp. Hopefully knowing his breed will help us find his home.

Anyway, here are some pics, his legs are a dark slate/black colour, his eyes are weird - dark brown, with a tiny rim of amber? Perhaps his pupils are just super dilated...

What colour is he? Is he black or a very dark red? If he's black with white soles my guess is Australorp. Handsome dude!

Not Giant or rock. From what I can see the skin between his toes is white, so he's an australorp or orpington. Would need a good sideways view to tell for sure, but my money's on orpington.

Okay, so I have absolutely no idea what colour his soles are, but I will let you know. He is black with purple and green iridescence in his feathers.

He's black with white soles. Very gentle and easy to handle considering his size. So I guess he's an Australorp. We'll see if anyone claims him. This breed is not on our list to keep.

Well no one claimed this beauty. We're wondering if they lost him while transporting and they're not local. Any one want him? Big breeds do not fit into my plan.

Thought about that but really don't have time to deal with the creeps and yahoos that will answer.
