I had 7 as well, and that was the original correct answer in the american standard testing. However, as you say, it's wrong, the two sides are in line and therefore there are 5 sides.

The other correct, but not counted answer is: 8

You get there by letting the triangle pyramid stick into the square pyramid. That way you have the tip of it coming out the other side. It has 3 sides, so 5+3=8.

Can't picture this?
The question says combine the 2 on the faces ABC and EFG- the only other way other that I could think of doing it (after the fact) was to flip one of the pyramids so the structure forms a star of david when you put the 2 faces together, then you'd have 12 faces.

Here's a handy trick a genius told me: If you have a piece of lumber or fabric or whatever and want to find the mid line, take your tape measure, and angle it across the piece so that you reach a whole number on the tape at the edge of the piece on the other side. The mid point is the average between the two numbers. Since this works for any angle of the tape measure, you can make the math easy.

Does that help?
the one with the square base is red, the other one blue. It's just placing the blue one inside the red. And you have one little piece of blue sticking out the bottom....

"Magic Number" (this has been pinned to my bulletin board forever, and just found it again this weekend when I finally got around to going through it):

First multiple this curious number by 9 to get 9801 (1089 x 9). Notice this reverses the original digits.
Next put a 9 in the middle of 1089 and do the multiplication 10989 x 9 = 98901. Again the digits are reversed, with the inserted 9 winding up in the middle of the answer.

Amazingly, you can insert any number of 9's before multiplying and the same pattern results: 1099989 x 9 = 9899901;
1099999999989 x 9 = 989999999901.
