Good Morning!

Post by hayladee » Sun Jul 24, 2016 1:42 pm

Afternoon all, HOT down here in Pa...need RAIN! Cant believe how dry it is and the humidity....ugh! The grands caught 4 of the young cockerels running around and put them in a pen overnight last night....they were in the same hatch and had been running together but came out this morning to one crowing and 2 dead...other one cowering in the corner, pen was on grass and 4x8 ft....lesson learned...check to see what they were up to before heading in the house for the night.
Question, my neighbor knew I was looking for a couple light brahma pullets and dropped off 2 dozen eggs for me to hatch while we were on vacation the last week in June, my sons fiancé was coming over to feed chickens and bunnies in the yard. she found the eggs in boxes on the porch and put them in the fridge.... they were in for about 5 days....any chance they will hatch? I put them in the bator when I got home...along with a few of my own (hate seeing those empty spots on the turner) lol, so will start hatch on Friday....just wondering if those refridgerated eggs have a shot?

Yes, expect good results. Al (the gawd) has demonstrated that moisture loss is the biggest "killer" of fresh eggs (he reports keeping eggs in ziploc bags in fridge over a month with good results) so a week in a fridge should not be a big deal. Good luck with that!

yes for sure! thats how i ended up with so many easter / olive eggers.... last summer I set a group of eggs and had about 40 open spots... I went to the fridge and took out every blue egg i had, no idea exactly how old they all were but some were definitely a month or even longer, they were just eating eggs. i really didnt expect great results but most of them hatched.

it would seem that an egg from a few days to a week old can be placed inside a zip lock bag and stored for an extended period of time and then hatched. the longest iv documented is apx. a month.

a fresh egg wont work if placed immediately inside a ziplock. it seems some evaporation must take place first.

of course eggs must be stored at an optimum stable tempurature. a fridge may seem a little cold but its stable, and as long as they dont freeze they should remain viable. also the fridge acts like a giant ziplock preventing evaporation. letting the eggs warm up to room temp before putting them in the incubator should also help to increase your odds.

I always find if i dont expect great results I usually end up with decent results LOL.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Funny how you become so attached to such stupid, crazy birds!
Yes, they're off to Quebec, so I at least know if I can have space for some again where to get some.
