Naked necks!

I adore this breed--I think they would be the ones I would keep if I could only keep one. These were from Performance Poultry. It is very hard to find breeders in Ontario! I want a rainbow of them. Our original naked neck, Pickles, lays olive coloured eggs. I can't wait to see what these guys give us!

I wasn't aware that these birds were an actual breed so i looked it up...thank you for the kick start and awesome photos..."Pickles"?...lol..great name.. :running-chicken:

Pickles was our first....in the same vein of picked veggies, one of our new girls is 'Kimchi' [fermented cabbage]. We are a little crazy round here.

They are a fantastic breed--you wouldn't think they are cold hardy with a naked neck, but the totally are. And they are my quietest chickens--only singing the egg song and very little else, especially compared to our noisy and chatty buckeyes and welsummers

Seems like everyone who has naked necks loves them! It's a dominant gene so it will show up in the first generation cross.

Silly question? How does the weather affect them there on their necks with no feathers? Cold? Hot? Sunburn? Mosquito bites?

They seem to be the perfect year round bird. I have seen them in flocks in Africa and in our -35 weather there was no problem. If she's cold she just tucks her neck in. She gets a little red but I think it's heat not sunburn. No huge problems with bug bites. If we could have roosters we would have a breeding program.

it is a shame they aren't more popular. I am considering even paying the fee to import them from the statez where you can get splash, grey and white. We really just got her as a novelty but even my husband loves them

The APA recognizes only red, white, buff and black naked necks, (at least to 1989) but because the gene is dominant you can easily make any colour naked neck looking chicken you want. Including a naked neck faverole, they would still have the beard and feathered feet.
This is the best reference I've ever found on naked necks. A very interesting breed for sure.
