Well, I was too late damn it! If only I hadn't balked at the prospect of surgery. I have no luck with Speckled Sussex...possibly because I like them so very much? Well, perhaps I should just give up on them. Wait, what am I saying...anyone know where I can get my hands on some lovelies?

That's a shame. :-(
I have some idea how that feels. You tried, but sometimes these things happen and there's not a lot you can do that will fix it. Even if you had saved her, crop issues can be an ongoing problem.
I like speckled Sussex too. I have one in my flock that is high maintenance, health-wise, too. Before I got her, I had researched the breed and was lead to believe that they were hardy, but that hasn't been my experience with this one.

So it's not just me huh. She is the 2nd Speckled Sussex I've lost to what I would consider a routine ailment that I am generally able to clear up with an herbal tincture or two... a 3rd was snatched by a fox in broad daylight. Thanks for the words of encouragement, I too was wondering if they are less hardy then the research suggests. Back to the drawing board I guess.Jaye wrote:QR_BBPOST That's a shame. :-(

Good call Ross, I will do that when I get home...was a bit too fussy to get into it when I discovered her this morning.

Yup, I had a peek. She was jam packed with chicken chow but beneath that was fairly large sized chunks of fresh green leaves. Based on the 1/2" - 3/4" size I'd say she had eaten mulched leaves if I didn't know better. They were green as tho she had chomped them right from the tree...it was compressed blocking her right up. Poor thing...I won't hesitate to resort to surgery (if there's a) next time, I can tell you that.
