Australorp for sure. Awesome egg layer and decent bird on the table. We had a 8lb (dressed) cockerel last weekend. It was all dark meat except the breast.

Even though I've yet to actually have personal experience with them, I'm going to say Chantecler! They are on my must have list for next year.

If you mean keep to enjoy then for me that's easy, Cochin bantams, that's it for me, I love them, like little kids walking around with their snow pants falling down, or at other times I think of the fancy English ladies with their hoop skirts at the ball and yet they have feisty personalities (chickenalities). Not trying to cheat here but if you are looking for functionality then hands down it would be Barred Rocks, I never liked the look of them, (dirty grey) and only got them because people kept asking me for some, once I had them I understood why they stand the test of time.

I agree with FRF. EO's all the way, IF I had to pick. They lay nearly every day, nice eggs. Super friendly, to the point of insane. As in stepping on them all the time. They grow fast. The roosters of the breed do make a nice table bird... and you can sex them early, as their wattles and combs show themselves almost at 2 weeks of age.
But.... I do like my colourful mutts.

For my 15 years of keeping chickens, there have been many "Favorite" breeds.
But I Always come back to my LUV affair of EE's (Ameraucana wanna be's )
I especially like the Muffs, the various color of eggs & their friendly nature (*o*)
BUT
in the last year I have become obsessed / fascinated / addicted to everything SHOWGIRL!!!!!!
I can honestly say I could give a rats ass if they laid eggs or not...they are cute, cuddly & like a stuffed toy.
IF the question is about a useful, egg producing CHICKEN ~ well it's gotta be EASTER EGGER
The SHOWGIRL will be my little FURBABY that makes me smile, & sits around to look pretty!!!!!
