Good Morning!

Post by WLLady » Thu Jun 30, 2016 10:49 am

yeah, it would be me doing it too because hubby has grass allergies....i'm just incredibly tired of the "hay battle" every year. but the guy i found is awesome, so i'll probably just put in a standing order year by year from him-if he doesn't retire! LOL

yes, i remember something about a coon, pjs and a pitchfork from the last forum too....
thankfully not much in the way of coons spotted here this year (yet). and the skunks seem to have been more trouble down the road....they have 2 dogs and the other day i was driving down past their place and BOTH dogs were in the road WITH a skunk...playing with it (of course the skunk was dead by then)...and it REEKED and i just thanked everyone that it wasn't my dogs and kept right on going....

Morning Everyone.

Happy holiday/day off/Canada Day

It's about to pour here. Thank goodness! Rain rain rain.

Off to the auction this morning with 4 (I think) cockerels, bag of chopped straw (can't give the crap away I tell ya) and 2 of my barred rocks that are sooooooo bitchy they are causing chaos in the flock.

Nothing hatched from my silkie eggs. I just don't understand. 8 eggs and nothing. Candled, all looked ok approximately 10-12 days with 2 questionable development. Yet. Nothing. I'll buy her some chicks at the auction today. She was due on Wednesday. And is still a devoted broody right now.

My ducklings are loving life. They follow me everywhere so I take them on walks. They're still too young/little to free range without a mom, and the cats eye them up pretty good. So they are on grass and I have put an extension on their coop/pen so they have a lot more room to roam. 3 evenings of teaching them with peas to go to coop at dusk and last night they put themselves to bed. Smashed peas with some oats waiting in the coop and they'll perform circus tricks if you want them too. So smart!

I've been swamped and haven't read much lately on here. I see I have some welcomes etc to get to ... Perhaps later with a coffee if the rain is going to come down like they say.

Hope everyone has a great day! A & W hash-brown, egger and coffee is calling my name.

Morning all!
Wow i go to sleep and sleep in and get up and like magic we have stationary pens and photo contests!! Thank you poultry_admin!!! So submit your entries to poultry admin or me or thegawd....we will go by time of submission to select the first 10 submissions for the poll.

Nice and cool. Looks like 3/8ths inch of rain. Not enough by far....but better than nothing!!
Great day to do some barn organizing in prep for hay. And clean up of the driveshed....lol
Last night mom turkey was trying to entice her "poults" (theyre surrogate chicken chicks) to get on the roost...want happening so i put a step stool in for them and holy...the world was coming to an end! The tom was trying to beat up the stool! Ended with mom on the floor as far from the stool as possible with 3 chicks on top of her and tom on the roost. Lol. Left the stool in...theyre all over it today, amazing what a nights sleep can do. Wee brains. Hope everyone got/gets some rain....and has a wonderful canada day!!

WOOOOO HOOOOOO, pouring out right now!! It sure won't last, we've had immeasurable up until now!! Hopefully its prepped the ground enough, whats fallen, this soaks right in. Not likely tho.

Went to the Lynden parade. Great parade... but definitely smaller this year. I'm thinking next year, I will get a bottle calf... and take it, with a bottle... and lead it thru the village. I wanted to do it the year we had mad cow... with a little dress on it that said "Canada's Mad Cow", lol. That devastated the cattle price that year, and for the next couple. Heck.. other than the last 3 years... its been poop.

Where I used to milk cows... they had this calf born.

We had one that big a while ago... I think hes in my avatar pic. Don't know if mine was overdue or not... sometimes you don't see beef cattle bred, when your running a bull. This came from a holstien cow.. she was a month over! I should go see it. Probably gone now. They sell their mixed/bull calves. They AI to beef... if they sometimes have troubles getting a cow to catch.

Still raining!! YAY!!

We are having a barbecue later, with the fam. I broke down and bought beef patties from Costco.. the roadhouse burgers... ya, I know, I have 450 pounds of burger in the freezer..... but I have a problem with them breaking apart on the grill. AND I bought a container of potato salad. Thats a first. I always make my salads. Desserts too. I broke down and bought a too tall lemon cake from M&M's. I haven't been feeling great this past week... and between bus/taking it back/apointments... I just hadn't the energy.

Out of 41 eggs in the bator... 2 guinea's have hatched. Batting 1000 here. Seriously got to get off my butt and candle earlier. I'm thinking I set the eggs too early.. the ones I did crack random WERE fertile.. but obviously most weren't. 3 looked good at lockdown, 3 not sure. They didn't look halfway cooked.. but didn't have the tell tale blood ring. So... at least there are 2 for the buddy system in there, lol.

I have another 7 to lock down soon, and I set the other brinsea. I pickled 50 guinea eggs last night, so maybe will set another batch, start saving now, and when the Brinsea is empty, fill both the hova and it.

Suns coming out. Guess thats it for now. Sigh. Well, we will take what we get!!

Have a great Canada Day!

Spent a huge hunk of my day at the auction. I do not know why I love it there but I do. My friend and I looked at everything and pondered this, that and the other. I bid in lavender orphintons but wasn't willing to pay as much as they went for. Ended up with 2 lion head mini lops. Ooooooo adorable!

I don't know what happened to the eggs under the silkie. Not one hatched. Perhaps I was greedy and by putting 8 under her I compromised them all. She's determined so off I sent Josh to drive to BVF's to pick up her 2 Guinea's that just hatched. Score! Besides, What else does a teenager like to do when they are a new driver. Drive. Works for me!!

Thanks Shirley! Now to transplant them under silkie mom. Wish us luck!

Hope everyone had a great day. Ribs on BBQ, awesome Cesar salad, lettuce from garden for dinner.

Cheers!

Terrible Kenya. Terrible. My friend put in some marans eggs and they went for $1.75/ea egg. Other eggs went for less than $1/ea. She got a dozen silkie eggs for $2. For the whole dozen!!!

My Easter egger cockerels went for $8/ea. My bag of chopped straw that I couldn't give away went for $7 so I only lost just under a dollar, which was great. The auction was my last ditch attempt. I left before the auction was over so I don't know how much my barred rock hens went for.

My friend paid &19/ea for her lion heads as they were the first bunnies to come up. I paid $7 for each of my bunnies as I waited towards the end for these ones. Same age-ish.
