Good Morning!

Post by Flat Rock Farm » Thu Jun 30, 2016 7:53 am

Yes it was quite the night and yes why we figured we had better get him because he/she would be back. Have had them get in the barn in the past and make one heck of a mess of my birds with 6 dead in one night. Figured out how it got in and secured it off, weird spot too that it got in, buggers!!

I will try not to wear myself out but geesh weddings are a lot of work!!!

Aye, me and raccoons: shoot on sight. Its been years since i had a problem but that first murder scene is still fresh in my head. 25 birds dead, heads chewed off, flock of black rosecombs gone except for three or four.

Carla still talks about me in my whites on a full moon night out with a shotgun. Not a predator attack but the weirdest night shriek we ever heard. Now we think it was a bobcat passing by.

Take time to enjoy the wedding!
I can beat the racoon and I'm sorry for the visual now. Previous house had a back deck. In the middle of the night I was treated to the sight of hubby, stark naked with his slingshot firing at a racoon as it ducked behind a post. We were closer to our neighbours then too.

I had a beautiful small flock on Porcelain Beared D'uccle, I loved those birds and the :sSig_censored: came in a ripped everyone of their heads off and pretty much left the bodies intact, also a beautiful SLW and one of my bantam EE's. As far as I am concerned the only good raccoon is a :rip: raccoon.

Thanks KB I WILL enjoy the wedding, this is my only child so it's a big deal for me!! Going to be lots of tears..........

OOOOO so glad that coon is gone!!!! yay!
horses are all freshly trimmed-early morning for them, neither of them were awake. and my one (ted) got his nose on something AGAIN. i'm swear i need to bubble wrap that animal! pull him in from the field and his nose is covered in blood...sigh. from a tiny little 1 inch round scrape-he probably tried to knock the tree over with his head again or something.
will call around for hay later today. regular for 4x5 rounds here is 65$. dry years they go up to 110$. 900-1000 pound bales easy...it's sw ontario. hay is always way cheaper out your way baron. that drought year we had all the army worms here i had hay trucked in, and paid 50$ a bale trucked in! its almost worth buying out there and paying to have it come in. i think we're going to plant our own hay...we have the land, just need the equipment. have a tractor. i can probably get a mower/crimper and rake fairly decently for the acreage i would be doing, it's the baler...i like the big rounds, move with the tractor....and i sure won't be lifting squares any time soon....so guess i'll start looking around. we decided on the horses staying, so we have anther 10 years or so with them. it's probably worth growing our own and not going through this every year. i can put 15 acres into hay no problem....and any extra i can sell LOL. that would be ironic....start selling hay to the people that i used to buy from....yeah....yes, they feed cattle. whatever, don't really care this morning, i'll find hay elsewhere. and it's still early in the season too. it'll just take some looking around, but lesson learned, twice bitten, moving on.....

today is technically thursday, but it's really NOT-it's FRIDAY! whoohoo! LOL well, okay, i know, but it feels like friday. yes, tomorrow is a holiday. doing a turkey fry with friends tomorrow. martin's wild turkey from the fall hunt last year i think. or maybe mine...or....well, whatever. it was in the freezer, its a wild turkey and it's thawing now, and will be yummy tomorrow. have friends coming out, and hopefully it's not too windy for fireworks in glencoe too! they put on a nice show every year, and it's close-i never went as a kid, so we went the last 3 years and thoroughly enjoyed them.

and on the list for the weekend is the driveshed and run in to finish cleaning out, a bit of fencing, clean up the barn, maybe clean up the house, maybe not. have a bit of grass to cut, and some scrap wood to rip down for the bonfire (an old bale holder that's got rotten over the years). some birds going to new homes, and a visit from baron it looks like :-) yay!

reminds me i have to order a bin too for the teardown. guess i'll do that today too.
hope everyone has a great day....and a great wedding this weekend too FRF!!!!

WLLady: i got out of hay; i couldn't take the dust with my allergies.

Farmers today go for silage/wrapped bales as it doesn't have to be as dry (unpredictable rain around here) to bale so older dry bale equipment is less in demand. We had a 4x4 baler international 8420 (8430 same machine and 5ft bale) and was the same machine as certain Hesstons. Hard core baler and reliable with belts. Some older generation balers were chain and steel rollers: lots of moving parts, very loud and needed lots of hp. We ran 50hp tractor on hilly land. 8420's can be had for 5 or 6 grand.

Do you really have time for more work?
