Bayvistafarm--Shirley

Post by Bayvistafarm » Tue Dec 22, 2015 4:53 pm

Yup.. new to this site!! Love it too.

For the ones that don't know me... we (hubby and I) own a 150 acre farm in West Flamboro... settled by his ancestors in 1817. Our grandkids are the 9th generation on the farm. (Well.. Sawyer lives on the farm, son Daves boy). In 2017 the farm will be 200 years old! Together we have 5 children, and 4 grandchildren, with a new baby due July 2016!!!!

We also farm another 300 acres... and grow corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay as cash crops, as well as feed for the 45 beef/cow/calf/finishers.

Husband drives a snowplow contracted thru the 'town' with Millers Maintenance and I drive a school bus. Farming really doesn't pay the bills. We are too small a farm to make bigass money, thus do it because no one else knows how to do anything else, lol.

We have 4 horses, a few rabbits, barn cats/house cats... a dog.. some goldfish, and my hobby.. scads of turkeys, guinea fowl, and a few different heritage breed chickens.. as well as breeding some very nice looking and laying mutts!!

I also have a bee hive... got into the hobby a few years back, but lost some hives along the way. Never had more than 3... and one starved out last winter. (That was my bee partners fault.. took too much honey off in August 2014).

I have a huge garden, and love to pickle and freeze produce. I also like to bake.. when I can find the time. Reading is also a huge hobby, but only get to do that when I hit the hay!

Every one of my birds came thru people on the former PSO... and now PTO. We can and do help each other with our addictions very well!!

Hello again, Bayvistafarm! What a great intro post!
I knew about your family's long history living on your farm from reading your posts on PSO, but still learned a whole bunch more you and yours, such as about the kind of farming you and your husband do. It sounds like a very busy life, but a really fulfilling one.
BTW, that new baby due in July is another grandchild, not another one for you, right? ;-)

glad to see we are all treated equally when it comes to the golf cart! :racer: LOL some days i seriously think our hubby's will find us wrapped around a tree somewhere at the bottom of one of those hill....if any of you know the expression truckers use "let it run"....LOL

200 years on the same land is something to be proud of for sure! i love how we can see so far, right over hamilton on a clear day! and the old century houses are gorgeous!

(not to mention the turkeys and chickens LOL. guineas...well.....the new lavenders are really pretty!!)
i still find it hard to believe that there were pigs up there in the barn at one time. of course, that's put to much better use now with chicken pens and bunnies!

LOL. If ANYONE wants a golf cart ride to the bush.... just come on over!! Unlike FRF... you have to hang the hell on, LMAO.

Yup.. Melissa. My 'baby' girl. It was cute the way they announced it.. for my birthday, they gave us each a mug... we unwrapped it, and it said grandma.. grandpa... July 2016. Took a minute I must admit for it to sink in.

AND you will have grandbabies soon enough. It really just seems like yesterday SHE Made her entrance to the world!!

Like Ross said... grandbabies make it all worthwhile... until they bring home disease after disease from 'dirty daycare', lol. That they give to ME.

Hi Shirley. It's been a long while since Mike and I were up to see you. We came for a pigeon that had taken up residence in your barn. Remind me to not accept a ride on the golf cart if we come to see you again. LOL
