well, maybe that's something we can work on....i know there was a lot of earlier discussion about do we have separate classifieds sections or integrate into the threads. problem with the threads is the risk of having someone jump in (i've seen this a lot at other places) where someone else thinks the birds aren't as good as theirs, or offers unsolicited "advice"....um....that's saying it politely....and we didn't want to get into that hassle, all it does is drive people away angry. so we opted for this kind of a listing, but if it's not working efficiently we can try something else....maybe integrate but lock the threads? threads can only then be replied to by PM or email? and only admins can unlock a thread for discussion? Potential for needing lots of moderating....or not....we have super members on here, so far things have been fantastic and not a lot of work for anyone (except maybe poultry_admin with updating LOL).
i know i'm also very very bad for looking at the classified, usually only if i want something or want/need to sell something....they're a dangerous place for me to be! LOL.

I have my quota of chickens that can be handled, so do not spend much time looking. Kijiji adds are sent to my mail everyday and I continue to read them for entertainment value ( mute chickens ) . When we needed a new car we browsed a lot of vehicle sites reading tests and personal complaints etc. Bought a car and stopped looking at car adds.
At this point the adds on PTO are used more for who sells what and where are they located for future needs due to that chicken math thing. I am not interested in show quality or specific breeds, but rather anything that catches my eye or makes me giggle.

I'm fine with it now. It's just that I hadn't spent the time learning the site.

If you've already exhausted Kijiji, try the Livestock For Sale Ontario group on Facebook.

muffin wrote:QR_BBPOST Just wondering, because I have been looking for birds, and rarely get any response at all... seems to me the previous group was a lot more active. We live in northern Ont, and I am always looking for stock as we need to travel down the Bruce Penninsula periodically, and I remember in the past there was a lot of poultry interest down that way.
Just to clarify, are looking for birds to buy?
In your specific case I think starting a Thread on when you are traveling and what you are looking for may be allowed ( she said hopefully) outside classifieds, there are indeed many people just cruising and this may inspire them to join or speak up?

I am seeing with the page view numbers and clearly reading here that there is a need to better integrate the classifieds into the forum.
Did I mention I like homework? I'll be looking around to see if there is a better integration method.
I agree, I saw the effort to keep arguments out of the sales ads as very valid, but I find I seldom hit the home page and the feel of what goes on there is lost.
Perhaps there is a way to have the For Sale and looking to buy included with an understanding that comments are to be kept out of that section?

I liked the comments in the for sale section, a lot of times that's what sold your birds .Yes you always have a few bad apples but that doesn't make the whole bunch bad. The way the old classifieds were set up got a lot more views because if you clicked on new posts it came up and if someone commented again it came right up on new posts. The way it's set up now a newbie would have problems finding it and the older ones aren't even looking. I know sometimes comments were unwanted but most times they were very nice commenting on how lovely they were or asking questions that prompted the seller to give more information which in the end sold the birds.
I know some people always make it bad but if we want to keep the membership growing the classifieds need to change and I think going back to letting people make comments or ask questions is the way to go. One of the main reasons people seek out this site is to buy and sell but if it's not obvious they go elsewhere.
Administrators and moderators are doing an excellent job, don't get me wrong, this is just my 2 cents, which is worth about 1 cent.

I usually have birds for sale but don't look at classifieds because I'm not buying.
I'm an infrequent poster because I usually only post slightly inappropriate comments.
My Grandmother taught me that it is better to keep one's mouth shut and be assumed a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

Clearly my grandmother dropped the ball. :)
