What makes a mean rooster?

Post by Farrier1987 » Thu May 26, 2016 8:12 am

Hey, never noticed or connected, but he does that. Come into the barn while I am milking and does it. I was flinging him a little grain from the goat's box when he did that. Thought he was getting friendly. No hens around then either. Soon after milking in the morning seems to be the time for him to have a go at my leg too. Not right away, but within half an hour or so. He is on parole now, and seems to be behaving.

So he has now learnt that if he threatens you he gets treats?
Last weekend hubby and I were having lunch on the patio. Of course all the birds arrive to check things out. Next I know is Lucky has jumped up and grabbed the top slice of bread from my sandwich! Politely gives it to the hens who were egging him on. Hubby then goes "Oh they want treats" and proceeds to give them some! I mean really?

i hope that's not my one i gave you! he was the sweetest thing at my place.....all i can think is it's territorial....if he had to fight to get a few hens from the other rooster you have then he might also see you as a threat to him. If it is the one you got from me (he's a wheaten marans) then pick him up and carry him around a while and do that every day for a while....i honestly never had any issue with him at all....sigh. he also wasn't a free ranger at my place, so maybe he got a bit overwhelmed at his new surroundings? he used to try to feed me food pellets and sunflower seeds....

I had a quad of Speckled Sussex. A Sweet rooster Sam & always well behaved.
They had a coop & an enclosed outdoor pen, no actual free ranging.
I have no children & it's pretty quiet here.

When Sammie went to another home, it was a different matter.
He had a Lot of SS hens & Free range Life style.
The new owners & their children are quite experienced with birds.
BUT Sammie started attacking their "red haired" son.
NO One else, just the poor kid with red hair!

"LUCKY" for Sammie, they knew this was new behavior.
( they had been to my home enough times to know he wasn't mean )
They found Sammie a home, instead of a pot.
It's been a few years now, & Sammie is a complete gentleman.
He is good to his hens & doesn't attack his owners.

BUT ~ I do Not keep any mean roosters.
It's too much drama, so they are re-homed with full disclosure.

If I am keeping or buying a rooster, I watch out for the "striking snake eye" if you put your hand up to his face and he focuses on the hand the way a rattlesnake focuses on something it's about to bite (on tv like national geographic, don't use a real snake) or that "stare" a border collie gives sheep, then look out. If you put your hand up in his face and he is startled, puzzled or frightened then usually he will be fine. For the new people, you will learn triggers to avoid in younger roosters so it gets better with more experience; however every now and again you will get a jerk so just add carrots and potatoes then invite us for soup, lol.

He has been well behaved and may soon be off parole. And yes WLLady, it is Charlemange, who I got from you.
